Industrial Design for Sport – extreme design masters scholarship
IED of Turin offers a scholarship for Dezeen readers
For the academic year 2010/11, the Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin, will give the possibility to Dezeen’s readers to participate in the selections for the allocation of a scholarship amounting to 50% of the attendance fee for the Master in Industrial Design for Sport – extreme design beginning in April 2010.
A classroom transformed into an extreme sports lab, a scintillating journey involving freedom of creative expression and experimentation, as well as studies in ergonomics, production technologies and design methods. The Master in Industrial Design for Sport – extreme design of the Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin was structured around this premise: a highly qualified training program which could provide designers with the ability to interpret the needs of sportsmen and translate them into a tangible project specifically suited for industrial development which might satisfy the performance requirements of the athlete and his or her complete communion with nature.
The master course engages the student in a research program involving a total of 1500 hours of teaching subdivided into theoretical class work, workshops, practical training and work experience. A full time commitment designed for graduates or other diploma holders in related fields and professionals with at least two years of experience in some compatible sector.
The Istituto Europeo di Design is an international Network that has been operating in the field of Education and Research in the areas of Design, Fashion, Visual Arts and Communication for over forty years. The Master in Industrial design for Sport – extreme design is part of a broad educational offer which includes three year post diploma courses, refresher courses and continuing education, advanced training courses and post-graduate Master courses all held in out branches in Italy, Spain and Brazil.
In order to prepare young designers to enter the professional world with the necessary abilities, the Master course, now being offered for the third year running, mixes field experimentation with design projects actually commissioned by companies and sports institutions: a winning formula that puts students in direct contact with the athletes, enabling them to experiment with the equipment and test their professional tools and products, before bringing all the acquired know-how into play for the final thesis project, the last stage of the training experience.
The relationship with the companies, which take part in the educational activities in an active way through their case histories and specific testimonies, is certainly one of the strong points of the Master course and of the Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin’s entire training method: after the company has had the opportunity of presenting itself, and outlining its philosophy, products and markets of reference, the students begin an individual research phase that leads to the development of the product concept from a technical, functional and aesthetic point of view; in a final meeting the innovative ideas and projects are presented to the commissioning company who examines and assesses the various proposals. Among the companies that have so far collaborated in this Master course we like to recall Ferrino, La Sportiva, Fiat Free Style, Loose, and Ninerbikes, the latter having commissioned the thesis project for the a.y. 08/09 which required the students to develop a complete shock absorber system for bicycles that might satisfy all of the companies technical, stylistic, ergonomic and market requirements.
For more details about the course please see here.
To take part in the selections you must send your CV and a project portfolio by the 26th of February 2010 to infomaster@torino.ied.it.
The candidates will then be assessed by the Master coordinator.
