Position description and responsibilities

We are seeking a full time urban planner for our Kansas City office. In this role you’ll have the opportunity to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to the planning and urban design challenges of the built environment, at the various scales of the city. You’ll contribute to the building of great cities that are built for people, fiscally sustainable, built by many hands, create community and in which the community can take pride.

In this role you’ll assist in the analysis, ideation, organization and preparation of innovative policy, urban design and various public documents to address the needs of varied clients and development settings. You’ll utilize skills in reviewing, researching and analyzing documentation of planning and urban design principles. You’ll work to translate community needs and aspirations to plans, designs and development standards, with an emphasis on urban design. You’ll be responsible for the management of and participation in policy planning, urban design and design details of a variety of projects. You’ll also work with development review applications for rezoning, site plan approvals, platting, variances, conditional uses and similar development applications. And, you’ll provide intellectual knowledge and support to a growing and evolving design studio as it impacts the quality of communities and cities.

We are seeking candidates with: 

  • professional degree in urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture or similar field and four to six years’ related experience
  • strong analytical skills (visual perception, document review and data gathering and analysis)
  • strong communication skills (written, verbal and presentation)
  • the ability to convey and/or illustrate new ideas both independently and in collaboration
  • experience with various production platforms and tools to support graphic production
