Brodie Neill is an innovative furniture design studio in London, led by the award-winning designer, founder and creative director, Brodie Neill. Fusing state of the art technology, traditional design and material expertise, the studio through both the Made in Ratio collection, and Brodie Neill commissions and limited editions produces high quality designed furniture for clients globally, including commercial, museums, galleries and private collectors. Brodie Neill also presents an array of exhibitions and high-profile public art projects rising in scale. The studio’s work is underpinned by sustainability principles and strives to find design solutions to tackle environmental issues.
Position
The technical designer must be a creative, solution oriented and experienced computational designer to support the creative director’s vision. The technical designer is the lead on all computational design for the studio, finding solutions to complex design problems for the development and delivery of a variety of projects across the business. The technical designer must stay up to date with current design trends, emerging technologies and advancement in design to ensure the studio is at the forefront of innovation. The role will also support wider priorities for the studio, feeding into material R&D and IT systems management.
Key responsibilities (not limited to):
- lead on computational design and advanced 3D modelling for complex projects in line with creative vision for the studio, as directed by the creative director
- deploy a high level of conceptual thinking, problem solving, clarity and a solution-oriented attitude to determining the best approach for design across a wide array of projects, including determining technology and method to create technical drawings and CAD models
- research, develop and effectively communicate design ideas, narrative and project development throughout projects to other team members, clients and key stakeholders
- develop work plans to drive the timely delivery of individual project and product workflows
- contribute to the coordination and preparation of project specifications
- stay appraised of emerging technologies, advancements in design, AI, science and mathematics to support the design and R&D outputs of the studio
- contribute to the wider outputs of the studio that are commensurate with the role, including IT systems management and driving efficiencies through the adoption of new technologies
Knowledge, experience and qualities:
- three to five years’ experience and university degree in computational design, furniture or product design, architecture, engineering or related fields
- experience in working on projects and/or developing products from conception to completion
- exceptional design skills, the ability to develop and communicate ideas clearly
- ability to resolve technical and design challenges through innovative thinking
- expertise in 3D www.brodieneill.com, parametric design and automation with advanced surface modelling of complex and organic forms
- expertise in Rhino 3D and Grasshopper, including NURBS surface modeling, SubD modelling and mesh modelling
- expertise creating technical drawings and communicating with manufacturers, clients and other key stakeholders
- working knowledge of Cinema 4D
- proficiency in rendering
- a knowledge of material R&D and an understanding in traditional and non-traditional material properties and fabrication processes to determine design solutions
- proficiency in the preparation of CAD data for CAM fabrication
- proficiency in Adobe Creative suite
- positive, solution oriented attitude to problem solving
- organised with the ability to prioritise tasks and bring a systemised and logical structure to workflow and individual projects
- ability to work in a fast-paced environment managing time sensitive projects within the brand’s new collections launches and custom projects
- work collaboratively to meet team objectives
