The Role DKA is looking to recruit a project architect to lead RIBA Stages 4 and 5, technical design and construction, on a major (c£45M construction) education project. This is a client monitoring role (CMT) where you will work closely with the design team and director to ensure the concept design is faithfully delivered through to completion. You will have proven experience leading a major project through these stages either working for a contractor under a design and build contract or in a similar CMT role. This is an exciting opportunity for an architect that enjoys being on site and wants to see a complex, architecturally ambitious project through to completion. For the right candidate, there is the opportunity to become a key senior member of the practice leading on the delivery of projects more widely and the direction of the business.

The practice

David Kohn Architects was established in 2007 and has gained an international reputation for the quality of its design. We collaborate with our clients, consultant teams and end users to deliver highly tailored schemes that exceed expectations. We are currently working on large scale projects including a housing scheme in Berlin, an architecture faculty in Belgium, a university residence in Oxford and a major arts institution in London.

Key responsibilities:

  • act as lead architect working for the client, monitoring the construction of a major education project
  • attend the construction site at least one full day a week and review the works and report back to the client design team
  • review contractor’s drawings, schedules, specifications and samples and highlight deviations from the employer’s requirements
  • lead in-house design team and liaise with client, consultants and other project stakeholders
  • review off-site manufacturing and agree quality samples of contractor workmanship
  • prepare regular reports that cover progress on site and any issues arising for the project manager

Experience and knowledge:

  • you will have proven experience, five to ten years or more, of delivering similar project in scale and complexity, being at least £20m construction value
  • you will be familiar with JCT D&B contracts and the roles and responsibilities of all members of the design team and wider stakeholder network
  • preferably your experience will be in the UK and in the education sector
  • preferably you will have worked as a client-side architect, protecting the concept design through the construction process

Skills:

  • you will have excellent communication skills, being able to explain complex site issues straightforwardly to the client whilst also being able to constructively challenge contractors regarding performance, quality and programme
  • you will have excellent construction detailing skills, being able to quickly test multiple solutions to technical issues arising on site through drawings, specifications and verbal instructions
  • you will be highly organised, be able to prioritise your work and meet deadlines under pressure
  • you will be able to think strategically about how to communicate complex issues such that the interests of different stakeholders are appropriately represented
