Helsinki, Finland
Museum director
at Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design
The Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design is recruiting for a museum director to join its team in Helsinki, Finland.
The Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design and AD Museum are pleased to announce the search for the inaugural director of Finland’s new national Museum of Architecture and Design, a landmark cultural institution set to open its doors on the Helsinki waterfront in 2030.
The establishment of this new museum is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration. In 2018, the state of Finland and the city of Helsinki published a study confirming the need for a museum that would reflect Finland’s architectural and design legacy on the global stage. Since then, major capital funding has been secured, and a new organisation has been formed through the merger of the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture to create a new national museum of architecture and design.
This is a hugely ambitious project, with a new museum building planned to open its doors on the waterfront in Helsinki in 2030. The new AD Museum will invite audiences in for a journey through Finnish design, from Aaltos to Angry Birds, baby boxes to bold prints, from Nokia to nanocellulose, Saarinen to Suuronen and from Vuokko to Vaarnii.
The Museum will play host to internationally prized exhibitions and immersive installations. It will be a new architectural landmark, with iconic exhibits, the timeless sea on its doorstep and the best cinnamon rolls in town.
The Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design are now seeking candidates for the role of this new museum’s inaugural director.
The post-holder will be responsible both for leading the activity and operations of the museum in its current form whilst also working to setting the strategic and creative direction for the new museum and supporting the team to deliver its vision and mission.
Candidates will ideally be a visionary and an inspiring creative and curatorial leader, with excellent people and communication skills. They will both lead and manage the museum’s staff through this period of change and will also be a spokesperson and advocate for the project.
