Waltham Forest design review panel member
at Frame Projects

Frame Projects is seeking design review panel members on behalf of Waltham Forest Council.

Waltham Forest is one of the most diverse and vibrant boroughs in the country, with strong communities, a unique landscape, heritage, cultural and industrial assets. It has a forward-looking council that is ambitious about ensuring that Waltham Forest is a place where everyone can enjoy a good life and where development is generous, joyful and considers people and the planet. To achieve this, the council is implementing an ‘exemplar design’ approach which makes clear that high quality design is more than what a development looks like, it’s about real consideration of human, social, environmental and financial value.

As part of achieving exemplar design, Waltham Forest Council is inviting applications for membership of its design review panel. The current Waltham Forest Design Advice Panel (WFDAP) was established in 2016 and has positively influenced the quality of development across the borough; the council’s ambition is that this new design review panel goes even further.

The new Waltham Forest Design Review Panel with work closely with the dynamic place and design team and will:

  • have a strong Waltham Forest identity
  • include a diverse cohort of panel members that have links to the borough and the right mix of skills to deliver exemplar design
  • be closely aligned with the council’s strategic priorities (responding to the climate emergency, safer streets and places, and accessible 15-minute neighbourhoods)
  • foster stronger connections and relationships with elected members, as part of building a design-led culture across the council

This is an exciting opportunity to influence the quality of spaces and places in Waltham Forest for the benefit of its communities. As well as contributing the right skills needed to shape quality development that aligns with the council’s objectives, all applicants will be expected to demonstrate their links to Waltham Forest and their understanding of what makes it such a brilliant borough.

The panel will have around 20 members and typically five members will attend each review. It will test the fundamental design principles of planning proposals both at pre-application stage and as part of the application process itself.

Applications are welcome from experts in the following areas:

  • architecture
  • town planning/urban design
  • landscape/ecology – including flooding
  • sustainability/low carbon design – including air quality
  • heritage
  • active travel/strategic transport planning
  • infrastructure engineering
