The German University in Cairo is an Egyptian Private University, established in cooperation with the German State Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart, under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts, State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Situated in the ancient city of Cairo, the GUC’s mission is to achieve excellence in teaching and research.
The Faculty of Applied Science and Arts enrols 1,250 students across three design majors: Graphic, Product and Media Design. The GUC (Cairo Campus) invites highly able and motivated applicants for the following vacancy in the Graphic and Media Design Department. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will engage in teaching, research, supervision and administrative duties. They will establish and lead a research group in the field of Graphic and Media Design, actively promote graduate and undergraduate research, and attract third-party funded projects in any chosen areas of interest in Design. Teaching covers design, technological and methodological content for the development and implementation of products, processes and services in the field of digital media. The professor should oversee and develop the practice of interactive media-based systems in the degree programs Graphic Design and Media Design. The position includes the establishment of specific Interactive Design Labs as well the engagement in academic collaboration with partner universities.
Experience/skills:
- doctorate/PhD or equivalent qualification or evidence of conducted research
- proven teaching and practical expertise in diverse areas of Graphic and Media Design, i.e. analysis, concept development, iterative design processes, requirements of design implementation
- strong commitment to progressive design education principles regarding a self-organized and responsible design study
- understanding of the implications of design practice within social, cultural, economic, scientific or technological contexts
- ability to work well with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional experience and aesthetic sensibilities
- excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills in English, which is the teaching language
- good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively
- an interest in working collaboratively within the GUC and with external partners towards the development of shared projects
Solid experience and a proven track record preferably in the following fields:
- practical background in connected user experiences and user engagement strategies; design of interactive-based media systems, with an emphasis on human-centred and participatory design
- extensive experience in the field of Interface Design for mobile applications and responsive web-based solutions with a focus on graphic layout, typography, and the development of visual language systems
- knowledgeable of contemporary prototyping tools such as Adobe XD and Figma
- knowledgeable of currently relevant developments and trends in the field of interactive technologies and media design as well as their impact on course content
- theoretical background in user-centered research methods and Service Design, in particular, Usability Engineering
Requirements
The title will be assigned to successful applicants based on the highest degree achieved, industrial experience, teaching and research experience.
