Vacancy for the Faculty of Applied Science and Arts

The German University in Cairo invites applications for vacancies to be filled effective in February 2025. The German University in Cairo is an Egyptian Private University, established in cooperation with the German State Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart, under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts, State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Situated at the ancient city of Cairo, the GUC’s mission is to achieve excellence in teaching and research.

The Faculty of Applied Science and Arts enrols 1,250 students across three design majors: graphic, product and media design. The design workshops and labs are an interdisciplinary department and are an important resource, where students conduct experiments, realise assignments, create design prototypes and participate in research. In the model making lab students are able to simulate design products for industrial manufacturing. The lab allows for synergies between digital prototyping and physical craft techniques.

The supervisor will manage, facilitate and oversee the daily operations and design projects within the model making lab at GUC. This role involves working closely within students, makers and innovators to ensure a collaboration environment that promotes creativity, innovation and technical skills in digital fabrication and design.

Responsibilities:

  • oversee the daily operations of the model making lab
  • conduct regular introductory and advanced courses for students according to the schedule and supervise individual student projects
  • monitor safety and health regulations, plan workshop investments and supervise material purchase
  • role involves explaining lab procedures, assisting users with equipment, supervising operations, maintaining inventory and collaborating on training sessions/lab tours
  • ability to maintain the above machines and keep them in good condition

Experience/skills:

  • a creative professional and design graduate with experience in academic teaching or a specialist craft
  • knowledge of woodworking techniques and materials research
  • skilled lab specialist with experience in maker spaces
  • proficient in software and digital fabrication tools such as Adobe Software, Rhinoceros 3D, CAD/CAM Software, Laser Cutters, Milling Machines and 3D printers
  • motivated to gain experience within an intercultural academic environment and be willing to develop an own profile at the intersection of digital graphic design, craft and technology
  • knowledgeable about current and future approaches within the field of model making related to design
  • interest in the training needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • ability to work well with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional experience and aesthetic sensibilities
  • ability to structure and define project goals in order to foster and motivate positive experiences
  • an interest in supporting and conducting research activities in the workshops and connect them to design
  • excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills in English, which is the teaching language
  • good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively
  • an interest in working collaboratively within the GUC and with external partners towards the development of shared projects

Requirements:

  • hold a degree in product design.
  • possess three to five years of model making and fabrication experience
  • demonstrated proficiency in managing FabLabs
