Jason Bruges Studio is hiring a production and workshop coordinator to join its team in London.

Jason Bruges Studio is a dynamic, multidisciplinary art and design practice based in London Fields in East London. Established in 2002, the Studio is internationally renowned as a pioneer of the hybrid space between art, architecture, and technology. Exploring the interrelationships between people, data, nature and technology, the team creates high-tech, site-specific artworks and dynamic, spatial experiences.  Intervening in the urban environment, they produce moments of theatre that connect people with their environments and weave a sense of magic into the fabric of a place.

As the production and workshop coordinator at Jason Bruges Studio, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless execution of our projects from conception to installation and the ongoing functionality and aesthetic integrity of our installations.

You will oversee all aspects of our workshop operations and assist the team of skilled designers and production managers to deliver high-quality, innovative solutions. Your expertise in fabrication techniques, materials, and project management will be essential in driving the successful realisation of our design concepts.

With the support of our production managers and creative technologists, you will be reasonable with the maintenance, repair, and optimisation of our artworks, employing a proactive approach to preserve their longevity and performance. Your expertise in technical troubleshooting, craftsmanship, and attention to detail will be essential in upholding the studio’s commitment to excellence and client satisfaction.

Workshop role:

  • oversee all activities within the workshop, including fabrication, prototyping, and assembly, ensuring adherence to quality standards
  • fostering a collaborative and productive workshop environment; provide guidance and support to team members to optimize their technical skills
  • collaborating closely with designers, production managers and engineers to understand project requirements and develop feasible in-house fabrication strategies; coordinating workflow and resources to meet project milestones and deadlines effectively
  • sourcing and procuring materials, tools, and equipment required for JBS workshop fabrication, ensuring cost-effectiveness and timely availability; establishing relationships with vendors and suppliers to negotiate favourable terms and maintain an updated inventory
  • implement quality control processes to uphold the studio’s standards of craftsmanship and excellence; conduct regular inspections and reviews to identify and address any issues or discrepancies promptly
  • ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and best practices within the workshop environment; implement measures to mitigate risks and maintain a safe working environment for all team members
  • maintaining accurate documentation of workshop activities, including project progress, material usage, and budget expenditures; generating reports and updates for project stakeholders and management as required

Maintenance role:

  • develop and implement comprehensive maintenance proposals for all installed artworks considering usage patterns and equipment lifespan; coordinate maintenance activities including routine inspections and cleaning
  • in collaboration with the JBS technical team diagnose and address technical issues and malfunctions affecting artwork functionality; develop effective solutions and repair strategies to restore artworks to their intended state
  • manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and equipment required for maintenance and repairs, ensuring adequate stock levels and timely procurement; develop protocols for tracking usage, conducting audits, and optimizing inventory management processes
  • maintain accurate records of maintenance activities including work logs, repair histories, and equipment specifications; generate reports and updates for internal use and clients detailing maintenance schedules, performance metrics, and recommendations for improvement
  • serve as the primary point of contact for clients regarding artwork maintenance and support services; communicate effectively to address client inquiries, provide technical assistance and offer recommendations for enhancing the longevity and performance of installed artworks
  • ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and best practices during maintenance activities, prioritising the safety of personnel and the protection of artwork assets.; implement measures to mitigate risks and maintain a safe working environment

Experience and skills:

  • bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as industrial/product design, engineering or architecture
  • proven experience (four years) in a similar role within a creative or fabrication environment, preferably in the fields of architecture, art or design
  • experienced with the installation and integration of low-voltage electronics
  • proficiency in fabrication techniques, including woodworking, metalworking, CNC machining and 3D printing
  • experience with relevant industrial software such as Fusion 360, Rhino, Grasshopper and Adobe Suite
  • excellent project management abilities, with a demonstrated track record of successfully delivering complex projects on time and within budget
  • solid understanding of health and safety regulations and best practices in workshop environments
  • exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams
  • highly organised and detail-oriented, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making
  • flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and deadlines in a fast-paced studio environment
