Overview
The senior design director is involved in all phases of a design project which includes the design of new build or refurbishment projects, including FF&E and colour schemes. Designs and feasibility studies are produced for commercial, hospitality, leisure and residential projects. The senior design director will oversee the project and lead the project team from beginning to end being the main contact for all correspondence with the client and consultants.
The senior design director may work in a range of different settings. The job combines the efficient and functional use of space with an understanding of aesthetics. The various phases of a project include briefing, concept design, schematic design, design development, design documentation, and contract administration including project coordination and site coordination. Other areas include budget pricing, budget management and procurement. The senior design director will ensure the design team follows the project quality process (PQP).
Job responsibilities:
- the senior design director will plan and organise the design team and their daily activities, setting out a clear plan and project program of deliverables and resources to ensure deadlines are met for all studio projects
- developing initial ideas and acquiring key information about potential projects, discussing requirements in detail with clients (the brief) and setting project schedules
- managing the PQP process for all projects assigned
- understanding individual clients’ needs and the needs of the people using the building, developing design concepts in consultation with the client and establishing final briefs and programs for the project
- considering materials and costs according to set budgets and negotiating project fees where appropriate
- conducting feasibility studies for projects
- researching and gathering information and photographs relating to the project; preparing design presentations
- producing ‘sample’ or ‘mood’ boards for presentation to clients with the team
- sourcing products, for example, fittings, furniture, lighting, finishes, decoration and dressing, and providing samples for clients; this will include obtaining costs for all items and coordinating budgets
- overseeing the preparation of detailed working drawings, designs, plans, models and schemes
- surveying buildings and reviewing site conditions where appropriate for a project with client and team
- working in a team as Lead with other designers ensuring all project objectives and deliverables are met
- overseeing and monitoring the team on-site and ensuring quality and design compliance
- working closely with quantity surveyors to establish costs and work schedules on larger projects
- working with designers, architects and other design professionals to determine the best
use of space, materials and construction methodology - review and sign off all design submissions and technical drawings for projects
- presentation of designs to client
- managing client’s expectations as the main point of contact for the project overseeing the team
- keeping up to date with new developments in the design industry
- interviewing designers and team during staff reviews and providing feedback
- prepare and monitor staff KPI’s
- interview new candidates being considered for the design team

Qualifications and experience:
- a proven record of success in senior-level general or commercial management, preferably in a related industry
- at least ten years of senior-level experience in the management of people and resources
- graduate level of intellect preferably with a higher degree in a management discipline or a professional qualification
- a wide knowledge of the industry
- an understanding of financial management and wider management principles and techniques
- political and presentational skills with an appreciation of the demands of conflicting interests and meeting statutory requirements
- a very high level of commercial awareness
- excellent communication skills, organisational skills, analytical and problem-solving skills
Languages and skills:
- excellent English skills (written, reading, spoken)
- required to have advanced knowledge of MS Office, Autodesk and Adobe applications
- possesses excellent computer skills for design i.e. FF&E specification software, CAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, BIM
- the ability to schedule and manage a design team as well as project management
