Senior/mid-weight interior designer

LXA London is recruiting a senior and mid-weight interior designer to join its team in London on a full-time basis.

As a senior interior designer at LXA, you will play a pivotal role in curating exceptional designs for our projects. Projects can be a mix of hospitality and educational design, to work-place and commercial projects. Your responsibilities will span the entire design journey, from conceptualisation to project completion.

The successful candidate will be passionate about design, enthusiastic and must be technically proficient with a very high design standard. We are looking for talented, experiences and down-to-earth interior designers who would like to expand with us and bring their own unique skills to the table.

Key responsibilities:

  • project leadership: lead and work on interior design projects from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines and budgets with minimal assistance from the senior design team members
  • full design spectrum: execute LXA’s complete range of interior design services, including concept development, space planning, coordination with other specialists, building and joinery detailing, FF&E specification
  • collaborative approach: collaborate closely with the design director and the design team to establish innovative project concepts
  • client relationships: cultivate strong client relationships, serving as a bridge between clients and the senior design team, and ensuring client visions are reflected in the final designs
  • design concept delivery: execute the delivery of design concepts, taking projects from feasibility studies through to successful handovers
  • presentation excellence: prepare comprehensive tender presentation and documentation and drive design proposals for client presentations, incorporating concept ideas, layouts and sketch-up views

Qualifications, skills and experience

In addition to the standard qualifications and skills required for this role, a senior interior designer have the following experience:

Qualifications and construction experience:

  • degree in interior design or architecture, or a closely related discipline
  • minimum of seven years’ experience, with five years’ experience in the hospitality or education sector
  • proven experience in running projects on-site under the guidance of the senior design team members

Soft skills:

  • proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp and Adobe Creative Suite
  • a passion for staying updated with the latest design trends, materials and technologies to bring innovative solutions to our projects
  • ability to thrive under pressure and meet deadlines efficiently while working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • maintain a goal-oriented approach to work, fostering positive relationships within the team and clients
  • possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills with fluent verbal and written English

Depending on the size of the project, you are expected to run your project with minimal support of the senior design team members. Requirements may also vary if specialised in FF&E design as outlined below.

Project design and execution:

  • coordinate and oversee the project’s documentation, ensuring comments and revisions are always up to date and drawing issue sheets are kept up to date and issued
  • specify materials to industry standard regulations and project requirements
  • strong knowledge of the LXA Full Scope of Works, Building Regulations, planning regulations and other statutory requirements
  • have full understanding of your project deadlines, work to your set deadlines and inform your manager of any risks in achieving set deadlines
  • lead project meetings with the full consultants’ team and organise delivery of a successful project
  • respond effectively to complex questions and troubleshoot problems, whilst working and switching between various projects
  • demonstrate a keen attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills
  • excellent verbal and visual communication skills to effectively present concepts to clients and team members
  • experience in managing design projects, as well as collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams

Technical knowledge:

  • prepare design presentations and drawing packages to an agreed drawing and document schedule in line with the project programme
  • prepare clear technical design drawings for tender documentation and construction packages
  • showcase excellent knowledge off detailing interior building details and joinery drawings
  • hold workshops with joinery companies and review joinery shop drawings to ensure full compliance with project

FF&E design:

  • specify materials and fabrics in accordance with project requirements
  • establish and maintain relationships with suppliers for sourcing materials
  • create or lead the creation of mood boards for presentations, ensuring they maintain high-quality standards and align with the design concept
  • develop comprehensive FF&E specifications for finishes, fixtures and equipment, including the creating of associated schedules

Project management and financial oversight:

  • maintain an understanding of the fee forecast for your projects, ensuring timely updates and client communication
  • evaluate project profitability monthly with your manager, analysing time spent versus agreed-upon fees
  • coordinate with your manager to address additional scope requests and additional fees or forecast alterations to ensure project viability
  • understand fee targets set for the team and your individual targets.

Client engagement and business development:

  • cultivate and nurture relationships with clients and project team members
  • attend functions, seminars, drinks, lunches etc. in conjunction with directors and business development manager where appropriate to promote the business
  • assist the directors, your manager and the company’s business development manager with marketing the business, promoting the business and winning work for the business
