Mid-weight interior designer

Mia Karlsson Interior Design is hiring a mid-weight interior designer to join its team in London.

This is an excellent opportunity for a midweight or senior interior designer to join our Highgate based studio for a period of 12 months, with potential for the role to become a full-time position.

This role will suit a highly skilled, creative, self-motivated and disciplined designer who is a team player and is used to managing their own high-end residential projects. The interior designer will be expected to take the lead on projects from concept to completion, as well as supporting the creative director on projects. This is a client facing role where the designer will also be a regular presence on-site during construction, so they must enjoy this collaborative aspect of the role. We require an in-depth knowledge of FF&E and extensive experience working with UK clients.

The primary responsibilities are, but not limited to: 

  • to manage selected projects from concept to completion
  • to assist the creative director where necessary by creating detailed technical specifications and drawings, including but not limited to general floor plans, kitchens, bathrooms, bespoke joinery and architectural details
  • ensuring the design meets the brief and is delivered to the agreed timelines and within budget
  • research, prepare and present high-quality design proposals including but not limited to concepts, mood boards, room layouts and material boards
  • liaise competently and confidently with clients to communicate ideas effectively
  • liaise competently with building contractors, architects and project managers
  • to monitor the time spent on each project against the allocated timelines
  • preparation of complete tender and construction interior design packages
  • manage FF&E research, sourcing, specification, procurement and supply processes
  • use BIID knowledge hub to keep up to date with the UK interior design industry by completing regular CPD courses
  • to maintain current knowledge and interest in trends and materials, techniques and other developments in interior design
  • to attend regular networking opportunities to improve skills and current design knowledge

Experience and qualifications:

  • relevant interior design experience preferably with interior architecture experience
  • minimum of six years’ professional experience (minimum four years UK based)
  • experienced in liaising competently with clients and communicating ideas quickly and efficiently
  • have a solid understanding of interior design process and stages –specifically the RIBA/BIID design stages
  • AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Canva experience or knowledge is ideal but not required
  • understand the complexities of design and finishing details
  • excellent research and sourcing skills
  • ability to apply a sense of style to create aesthetically pleasing interiors
  • strong visual design skills, including proportion and aesthetics
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • ability to understand the complexities of design and finishing details
  • good understanding of building codes and inspection regulations related to interiors
  • awareness of client budgets and proven experience of designing accordingly
  • be able to manage projects and procurement of FF&E
  • be able to manage time efficiently and work to tight deadlines
