Perkins & Will London office is currently recruiting a project manager who will be responsible for the management of multiple design projects.

Primary responsibility for leadership in collaboration with the project principal and project designer in both the relationship with a specific client, and the success of the project, as measured in client satisfaction, quality of work, profitability of work, and well-being of both the firm and project team. Administers all phases of the project through construction including budgeting, scheduling, planning, design and construction documents with authority to direct and monitor all activities.

The job holder must be prepared to adapt to evolving job demands and may be expected to take the initiative with duties that are not detailed here, but which they can be reasonably expected to perform.

Design:

  • understands design philosophies and current trends throughout the profession, including planning and strategies, design and space planning, documentation, specifications, materials and finishes
  • understands the overall design concept and helps ensure implementation
  • understands and responds to the technical implications of design decisions
  • promotes firm and project goals of excellence in design, execution and sustainability

Technical:

  • understand all aspects and phases of the building design process

Management:

  • define, monitor and maintain control of the scope of work and services for the project including the project schedule and resource plan
  • prepare and negotiate client and consultant proposals, fees, schedules and contracts
  • responsible for the clear and timely communication of information to the project team and ensuring compliance with the project team’s goals, bringing project risks to the attention of leaders and advising them as soon as project goals may not be met
  • assures a positive teamwork atmosphere and assists in supporting the development and retention of quality staff
  • monitor the performance of the project team and approach to ensure that the studio’s quality standards and design goals are being met
  • coordinate staffing resources with the studio’s operations director
  • initiates documents and maintains project set-up, including contract review, project process and filing procedures, work authorization and invoicing/receivables
  • responsible for meeting or exceeding the financial goals established for the project and providing timely and appropriate information to the finance team to initiate invoicing
  • direct contact responsibility with clients and associated consultants to ensure timely collections and management of delinquent accounts receivables
  • monitor client issues and technical issues to minimize liability
  • follow through with post-contract administration requirements (ie: follow-up phone calls to ensure client satisfaction and source additional marketing leads, complete final historical database etc.)
  • responsible for the orderly close out of projects including contractual requirements
  • participate in marketing opportunities and facilitate multi-discipline/office collaboration within the firm
  • develop and maintain successful client relationships for repeat business
  • participates in training/development/mentoring of the project team.

Education:

  • essential: degree in architecture/design/design management/project management or related discipline
  • qualifications: MAPM or equivalent
  • desirable: project management qualification such as PRINCE, APMP or diploma

Experience:

  • successful design management of one project valued at over £10,000,000 in construction cost
  • at least ten years’ post-qualification experience and at least one year in an architecture/interior project management position preferably within a design practice.

Skills and competencies:

  • knowledge of the project design process, construction documentation, programming, space planning specifications and materials and finishes
  • understand project financial management and contract administration, including project coordination, budgeting, scheduling and contract negotiations
  • experienced in various forms of UK Contracts and Appointments
  • basic project management software skills (MS Project)
  • ability to direct, mentor and coordinate the work efforts of the project team
  • strong interpersonal skills, verbal, listening and written including client presentation skills
  • collaborative and professional work ethic
  • ability to exercise good judgement
