The studio was founded in 2024 and is led by Rachael Davidson and Pete Jennings. With 40 years combined experience Smiths continues to create useful, versatile and repairable buildings that showcase the process of making. Our output is measured, edited and distinctively simple. We specialise in complex and compromised sites and the bringing together of divergent uses. We help clients make meaningful places that communicate culture and accommodate change.
Smiths brings together a range of voices including Women in Architecture, Build the Way Traineeship and London School of Architecture to create places with depth of meaning and function. We foster an expansive attitude to environmental responsibility and donate 1 percent for the planet.
About the position
We are looking for an experienced architect, with a minimum of three years’ post-Part 2 experience, with a creative background and exceptional design skills who wants to be part of a growing studio and play a key role in delivering Smiths’ first buildings and spaces.
You will work on a range of projects – initially focusing on workplace but including cultural and retail spaces across work stages. You will help to generate and refine design concepts, while independently managing work packages in line with project briefs and deadlines.
As a small team we place great value on regular design reviews and knowledge sharing within our open studio environment. We are committed to supporting the positive wellbeing and individual development of our team, as well as offering the chance to get involved in teaching and volunteering depending on personal interests.

Qualities:
- excellent people skills and the ability to communicate design ideas in an engaging, sophisticated way
- passion for architecture and creative arts, and able to relate diverse precedents and design ideas to architectural projects
- three to four years’ experience of working successfully across RIBA stages with excellent knowledge of current UK regulatory environment
- experience across a number of design led projects through to completion, must include at least one workplace project
- is motivated by complex briefs and the opportunities of architectural practice today
- able to communicate design across a range of software – this must include excellent working knowledge of Revit and ability to think and model in 3D
- collaborative and flexible
- ability to prioritise and to work on several projects simultaneously
- committed to achieving exacting standards and high-quality design
