SPD Studio is seeking a qualified architect to join its team in Colchester, UK.

We are seeking a talented and experienced architect to join our dynamic team in Colchester, Essex. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in residential architecture, with a proven track record of managing projects from initial concept through to completion. This role requires expertise in planning, design development and construction drawings, along with a deep understanding of building codes, regulations and construction processes.  The role is office-based in Colchester.

The successful candidate will be required to hit the ground running on various residential projects varying in scale. Therefore, you must have substantial UK project experience within the residential sector and existing client-facing skills. Your role will involve managing a range of projects, from one-off bespoke sustainable dwellings to large-scale, high-end residential schemes of up to 50-100 units.

Day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • lead design processes from concept to completion for residential projects
  • produce detailed design drawings, sketches and models
  • prepare comprehensive construction drawings and specifications
  • coordinate with engineers, consultants and other professionals
  • checking drawings and identifying potential issues that may arise
  • ensuring the project is delivered successfully on time and to a high standard
  • liaising with clients, contractors and the architectural team
  • working in unison with the senior architectural technician and principal architect
  • conduct site visits to monitor construction progress
  • resolve design-related issues during construction
  • reporting to the directors on project progress

Key skills:

  • software proficiency: expertise in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp and Adobe Creative Suite
  • design and visualisation: excellent design skills with a keen eye for detail
  • construction documentation: ability to produce high-quality construction drawings and specifications
  • project management: strong ability to manage multiple projects, timelines and budgets
  • client-facing: excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders
  • problem-solving: aptitude for identifying and resolving design-related issues during construction
  • regulatory knowledge: strong understanding of UK building regulations and understanding of detailed construction drawing packages

Essential requirements:

  • RIBA chartered architect
  • must have previous experience operating within the UK residential sector
  • proficiency with AutoCAD and Adobe Suite; Revit is desirable
  • working knowledge of UK building systems, regulations and construction types
  • excellent client facing and job running skills
