The Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship (W 1 – tenure W 2) for “Theory and discourse of design engineering”(legal basis: W 1 LBesG NRW; § 36 HG NRW).

The position should be filled by October 1st 2020.

This professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States.

We are looking for an excellent scientist in an early stage of his or her academic career, who is investigating the development of knowledge in the field of architecture both in theory and design practice.

Since the 1990s, faculties of architecture have been intensively engaged in international discourse about the question of how architectural design can be systematised and further developed as a form of scientific knowledge acquisition. An essential aspect of this scientific discourse is the identification of methods of knowledge acquisition as developed by designers and the translation of these methods into narrative strategies extending beyond the scope of traditional design tasks. This includes the determination of a specific instrument for the architectural discipline, or a “culture of knowledge” for architecture.

The core competence of the professorship is architectural design. Applicants are expected to have taken the first essential steps in the architectural-cultural discourse, which are usually reflected in articles in specialised journals or book publications, as well as in curatorial initiatives and the successful participation in international architectural competitions. In addition, the applicant is expected to have established a visible presence at key international universities, which is reflected in teaching positions or temporary guest professorships. Participation in the important architecture biennials in Chicago, Istanbul, Rotterdam or Venice is considered a particular indicator of the desired presence in the discourse.

Since its foundation, the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering has promoted the integration of interdisciplinary research contexts, for example on the topics of transformation and sustainability, into architectural design.

With its focus on viewing design as a discursively oriented process that goes beyond aesthetic issues and integrates a variety of societal concerns of current technical, cultural and social developments, the junior professorship is embedded in precisely this development process within the field of architecture. The University of Wuppertal is thus strengthening its position in a topic that is attracting a high degree of international attention under the label “Research by Design”.

We are seeking to appoint a person who is involved both in design practice and in theory with the knowledge production in the field of architecture.

  • a university degree in the field of architecture
  • a clearly recognisable profile as a designer in the field of architectural design
  • a particular competence in academic research, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a relevant doctorate
  • pedagogical capacity, which is proven by appropriate previous training or, exceptionally, established in the appointment procedure

Further requirements which are considered relevant:

  • publications of design projects and their evaluation in internationally recognised media of professional discourse
  • contributions to internationally recognised forums of architectural culture, e.g. architecture biennials and comparable exhibitions
  • contributions to the international societal discourse on the design of the environment and architectural culture, including in the wide-ranging media and relevant online platforms

The University of Wuppertal regards the equality of women and men as an important responsibility, which the professorship helps to realise.

Tenure track:

Starting as junior professors they are appointed normally as civil servants for a period of three years. These positions are extended for three more years if the junior professors have successfully passed an interim evaluation. After a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the candidates are appointed for a permanent position (level W 2). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement and a written confirmation verifying the negotiated financial and personal resources of the professorship are an integral part of the acceptance agreement between university and candidates.
