VCUarts is seeking an art director to join its team in Virginia, USA.

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) seeks a dynamic art director who is a visual storyteller with a passion for making communications clear, beautiful and engaging. You will show your creative problem solving skills for a range of media to execute innovative and integrated campaigns with the goal of increasing VCUarts’ national and international presence and impact. You will contribute to the realization of robust communications, recruitment, and development goals as well as strategies to highlight the national rankings of five of the school’s graduate programs. By implementing the VCUarts visual brand, you will work to create visual harmony across communications channels including print and digital books, magazines, print and display ads, posters, graphics for video, social media, and animation/motion design. You will partner with copywriters and strategists to create inspiring assets. Bring your unique self and perspective to our team and culture. Reporting to the director of communications, be an active member of a creative team motivated to build brand affinity and support strategic goals through creative solutions.

What you will do – essential responsibilities

Strategy:

  • interpret strategic direction and develop clear and consistent creative solutions and designs
  • plans, analyzes and creates visual solutions to marketing and communications challenges, finding the most effective way to get messages across in print and electronic media using color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print and layout techniques
  • serves as a primary steward to ensure consistency of design and brand standards across all VCUarts materials
  • provide multiple creative solutions for design tasks to solve strategic goals
  • maintains primary ownership of projects with the independence to work through projects and make decisions using own judgement

Creativity and design:

  • deliver cross-channel innovative creative designs for VCUarts communications and marketing initiatives
  • lead creative ideation sessions
  • maintain knowledge of emerging technology and creative trends
  • serves as a primary steward to ensure consistency of design and brand standards across all VCUarts materials
  • ensures all creative work adheres to University and VCUarts policies, guidelines, quality of communications and standards and while consistently increasing a positive presence and reputation of VCUarts
  • other duties as assigned

Teamwork:

  • partner within a cross-functional team to deliver exceptional creative deliverables
  • interacts regularly with all members communications team, as well as leaders in administrative and academic departments, to gain project insight and direction
  • present design work to partners and stakeholders with design rationale, tying to strategy brief and brand guidelines
  • demonstrates respect and regard for the creative work and ideas of donors, alumni, students, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment
  • independently resolves routine issues, and makes logical decisions and recommendations to upper administration

Budgeting:

  • collaborates with all departments within VCUarts, as well as other key university offices, and proactively drives multiple projects from concept through production while ensuring designs consistently meet objectives on time and on budget
  • communicates effectively with internal and external customers and vendors
  • makes regular independent decisions which facilitate the efficient use of resources
  • maintains an active and current archive of all VCUarts communications materials and related expenses

Minimum requirements:

  • bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field
  • four plus years’ of design experience
  • proficiency in design and design software tools including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign; Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • the drive to stay on top of industry trends and best practices, sharing inspiration with teammates and creative partners
  • ability to convert ideas quickly into concepts
  • self-motivated, problem-solver with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • ability to collaborate productively with other designers contributing objective and constructive feedback
  • strong knowledge of digital design and ability to innovate while still following visual and brand guidelines
  • ability to build and maintain strong relationships
  • ability to mentor, train, and supervise full-time and/or part-time staff
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively through verbal, written, and visual methods
  • interest in translating consumer insights and data into design solutions for customers
  • demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU and the ability to support and contribute to an inclusive, welcoming, and accessible professional community

Preferred requirements:

  • master’s degree in graphic design or related field
  • seven plus years’ of design and art direction experience in an agency or in-house creative department
  • experience with motion design, illustration, photography or video editing, and the rest of the Adobe apps or Premiere are a plus
