Rural Maps is searching for a cartographer to join its office in Hampshire, UK.
Our company
Rural Maps produces bespoke maps for landowners in the UK and further afield. Virtually all our work is for private sector clients.
The studio
Operating from a spacious, pleasant converted brick and flint barn high up in the South Downs National Park. Whilst decidedly rustic, we benefit from super fast fibre broadband, stunning views and peaceful surroundings. Bathed in sunlight during the summer months and cosy with a wood burner crackling away in the winter.
The role
You will be responsible for computer-aided design (CAD) production of maps. Collaborating data from Ordnance Survey, Land Registry, Rural Payments Agency (RPA), utility companies, as well as existing maps and plans from clients. Interpretation of aerial photos, tracing and classifying features.
This is not a surveying role. On site measurements are rarely required. Almost all maps are produced remotely using existing map data and aerial photos.
We create maps in two styles:
- a functional map design, primarily developed for the day-to-day management of farms and estates
- a decorative style for estate and shooting maps, referring back to the great cartography of the past
Skills and expertise:
- experience in design is essential
- the software used will likely be familiar to someone from the architecture or landscape design industry
- love of the countryside and familiarity with the terminology used by those who live and work in it is a must
Essential experience:
- understanding and keen interest in maps
- proven working knowledge of Vectorworks (CAD) and Adobe Illustrator
- basic Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
Attitude:
- a commitment to producing work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential
- amenable to working in a quiet environment, collaborating with a small team (two to four people)
- ability to identify innovative solutions to problems
- ability to analyse information from different sources
- all applicants must be currently eligible to work in the UK
Desirable skills:
- basic understanding of digital cartography
- geographical information systems (GIS)
- Adobe Photoshop
- social media
Additional info
Travel:
- site visits are occasionally required to client’s properties, but the bulk of work is done remotely at the studio
Access:
- the studio is remote, has no public transport nearby
- the closest city, Winchester, is a 15min drive
- free on-site parking
- the studio is on a first floor, accessed via an external staircase
- those considering cycling here should bear in mind there is no shower or washing facilities
