Architect/design technician
The Prince’s Foundation For Building Community is looking for an architect/design technician to join its London team.

The role:
The Prince’s Foundation believes that sustainably planed, designed and built communities improve the quality of life for everyone who is a part of them. This role is within our projects team, based in our Shoreditch office, which has a strong focus on traditional architecture and undertakes a variety of projects internationally and nationally – from new cities to individual buildings. The ideal candidate will have five plus years of experience and a portfolio demonstrating advanced knowledge of housing schemes in the Middle East. To be successful for this role, you must have strong technical skills in preparing detailed design packages, including coordination with MEP and structural wngineers. Experience in urban design and master planning a plus.
This is a permanent position, with the successful candidate due to start on 15 January 2017.
Key tasks:
The key requirement for this role is to undertake and lead on the production of technical drawing packages and coordination with other design elements on large housing projects. This will, on occasion, include preparing internal and external presentations and attending design review meetings in the Middle East – for periods of up to two-weeks. It will also require experience in terms of internal auditing, document control and technical standards.
Key tasks associated with this role are:
- work in an existing team to produce detailed design packages and design codes
- lead the architectural technical packages associated with housing types, including:
- preparing plans at the architectural scale in AutoCAD at 3D and 2D
- prepare sections, elevations and supporting detail elements in packages
- review external consultant packages – including engineering coordination
- lead coordination efforts with international structural and MEP consultants
- manages technical aspects of projects while monitoring important deadlines
- assist with drawing up master plans, block layouts and site plans – including site setting out coordinates. Also, where needed, coordinate with MEP, highway design and landscape public realm works – including review of external consultant packages
- work closely with outside consultants to ensure communication of objectives and needs are clearly understood and carried out throughout the various design stages
- develop visualisations – both by hand and electronically) using a range of mediums including AutoCAD, Rhino, Sketch-Up, InDesign and Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop
- undertake value-engineering work and understand material outline specifications
- prepare quality reports, publications and presentations in InDesign on occasion
Associated skills
- necessary requirements for this role include:
- postgraduate degree in architecture or similar technical qualifications
- experience in managing large drawing packages with various consultants
- minimum of five+ years of experience in architecture, including delivering technical design and housing site layouts, including experience on Middle Eastern projects.
- knowledge and experience of residential design – including house and flats design
- experience in design of mixed-use buildings – including office, residential and retail
- knowledge of integration of technical information and incorporating statutory requirements into production drawings – including assisting in the preparation of drawings for planning and governmental approval, tender and construction purposes
- ability to use the following programmes: AutoCAD; Photoshop; Illustrator; InDesign; Microsoft Office; SketchUp and/or Rhino 3D – including advanced rendering skills
- experience in preparing outline specifications and written tender documentation
- knowledge of infrastructure – including experience in MEP and structural issues
- excellent verbal and written English – including confidence in preparing reports
- confident hand graphics, including the ability to address urgent design issues
- legally able to work in the UK without work sponsorship requirements
- beneficial skills required for this role include:
- knowledge of planning, zoning and preparation of design guidelines an advantage
- expertise in consultant management and the ability to accurately comprehend clients requests – including preparation of accurate design materials under quick deadlines
- demonstration of experience of working abroad – especially in the Middle East and an ability to interpret local authority regulations on larger international projects a plus
- evidence of understanding around traditional architecture and conservation issues.
Salary:
£37,000 – £42,000 – depending on experience
