Greater London Authority is seeking an urban designer to join its office in London.

The growth strategies and urban design team at the Greater London Authority (GLA) are recruiting for a grade 6 urban designer.

£17.22 per hour via PAYE and holiday pay.

Contract role until May 2020

Role summary 

We are looking for a skilled, proactive and enthusiastic urban designer to join our growing team to contribute to a range of exciting and unique strategic urban design projects we are delivering across London.

This is an important supporting role in the team, and will involve:

  • assisting in the production of London Plan Opportunity Areas Planning Frameworks (OAPFs). These interpret strategic and local policy as strategic urban design guidance, and help to steer the development of areas with significant growth potential. This area of work will include analysing study areas, developing concepts for change at a strategic level, master planning, and ensuring stakeholders are properly engaged throughout the process
  • supporting the growth strategies and urban design team in using design-led solutions to support London boroughs in resolve complex spatial planning issues, for example over increased densities, combining land uses, and intensifying industrial land
  • providing spatial planning and urban design advice to GLA staff on development management, local development documents and other mayoral concerns, including those arising from the proposals of other organisations
  • providing advice on, and research into, current and emerging strategic planning matters, spatial development trends, and urban design-related issues facing London

Tasks

This is a busy and involved role, and its scope will include:

  • the preparation of maps, drawings and plans
  • working with the team to evolve concepts for areas with potential for change
  • 3D modelling as part of the process of establishing development capacities
  • written reporting and document design
  • shaping public engagement events

What we are looking for:

  • substantial progress towards a degree in architecture/urban design or equivalent. An additional qualification or experience in urban planning is desirable
  • knowledge and understanding of national, regional and London strategic planning and development issues, legal processes, policy trends, and broad knowledge and understanding of local planning issues and processes and a knowledge of urban design, place-making, and master planning
  • good working knowledge of GIS programmes, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and CAD software. The ability to convey spatial ideas graphically in a clear and compelling manner is important. This should be combined with skills in drawing and modelling master plan and development plot layouts convincingly and accurately, so that site development capacities can be derived and interrogated
  • evidence of an ability to investigate, analyse and present urban design solutions for spatial planning issues
  • excellent communication skills; and evidence of ability to prepare clear and concise reports, presentations and briefings, including an ability to illustrate ideas through mapping and graphics presentations
  • evidence of ability to self-organise and prioritise sub-tasks within the framework of a larger project plan, under the direction of the project lead and in support of the wider team. This would include the ability to assess how long tasks might take in order for deadlines and project milestones to be met

You will also have demonstrable knowledge and enthusiasm for best practice urban design and the principles of development.  This role requires a high level of personal organisation and ability to work as part of a team involved in multiple projects. You must therefore have exceptional verbal and written skills, and be highly numerate and computer literate.
