Jan Hendzel Studio is seeking a studio manager to join its team in London.

We are excited to invite applications for a new member of our core team.

Jan Hendzel Studio is a group of passionate and experienced furniture makers and product designers based in Woolwich, south east London. We pride ourselves on innovative design, challenging technical joinery and pushing the boundaries of what it means to work with wood.

We are looking for a studio manager to contribute to the smooth running and growth of our business. As a key team member you will help manage the day to day running of the studio as well as our growing roster of exciting projects and commissions. You will take initial enquiries through to final delivery – liaising with clients and contractors, and maintain, develop and initiate organisational systems that ensure projects meet budgets, deadlines and client expectations.

At heart, the essential requirements are passion for furniture and design, excellent organisation, adaptability and someone comfortable working closely within a supportive team. We want to build on the success of the Studio’s recent work, and are looking for someone who will join us on our journey to new heights, helping to shape and steer the studio’s future direction.

Ideally this is a full-time position based in our Woolwich studio, South East London, but there is some degree of flexibility dependent on circumstance.

Salary circa £26,000 – £32,000 PA, depending on experience.

Please note – this is not a job for someone wanting to make furniture in the workshop.

Key responsibilities: 

  • being a first point of contact for clients, customers and contractors
  • identifying and liaising with subcontractors
  • financial management; liaising with accountants monthly, bank reconciliation, filing, project invoicing
  • providing informed project quotes and lead times
  • ordering and researching materials and fabrication techniques
  • time-tabling fabrication and keeping records of project costs and staff time
  • understanding project feasibility and offering value engineering proposals
  • carrying out site surveys/measurements
  • helping to research and put together proposals and tender documents
  • managing online shop orders and enquiries
  • streamlining and improving project management systems
  • general studio management and day to day organisation of the studio and workshop
  • managing, motivating and developing staff

Skills

Highly desirable:

  • highly organised, proactive and efficient studio manager
  • clear verbal and written communication (Fluent verbal and written English)
  • good working knowledge of office software/organisational software
  • knowledge of bookkeeping software (Xero)
  • confidence in liaising with suppliers, contractors and clients
  • understanding of architectural and construction drawings
  • understanding the running of a workshop

Of interest:

  • understanding and assessing site-fitting and installation
  • technical knowledge of furniture/product making processes
  • CAD experience for delivering sketches for costing, clarifying components, etc.

Experience

Highly desirable:

  • minimum of two years studio management experience
  • experience in the furniture making field

Of interest:

  • working on sustainably-driven projects
  • a design background
  • an understanding of processing and working with timber
