Architectural designer – sustainable environmental design

Make is building a full-time sustainable design team to enable all our projects to address the climate emergency head on. We are looking for an environmental designer, architectural designer or engineer to lead, support and guide the integration of sustainable design solutions across all projects, supporting projects from their inception through to procurement. Your role is to be an advocate and expert in all matters related to sustainable design within Make. This role would suit an early career professional keen to establish themselves in a leading architectural practice.
Responsibilities
- to work with project teams to develop integrated building designs with low carbon, circular materiality, ecological footprint, resource efficient/low carbon solutions and sustainable development goals principles
- provide design focused research, consultancy, and guidance on sustainable building and masterplanning strategies, sustainable planning, policy and practices, first principle passive design, benchmarking and environmental design
- work on the delivery of project specific zero carbon roadmaps, decarbonisation strategies, and passive design response
- have consideration for the whole life carbon of our decision making, though embodied carbon considerations
- expand Make’s existing sustainable design processes and coordinate Make sustainability working group – MakeNeutral
- to create process and tools for the practice to implement the rapid first conceptual evaluation and visualisation of architectural designs
- working with directors and internal stakeholder group (MakeNeutral) to evolve and develop strategic practice approach to the climate emergency
- support design teams in the use of environmental simulation tools, devise methodologies for analysis and visualisation of specific environmental design problems
- develop bespoke sustainable strategies to improve the environmental performance, from the scale of detailed building studies to conceptual masterplans
- maintain and/or develop a broad understanding of sustainability and climate change issues as they relate to the built environment including application of DfP, LEED, BREEAM, WELL, Fitwel and other international benchmarking systems
- support projects across three international studios
Essential skills and experience:
- experience in the architectural design process
- experience in sustainable design, environmental engineering, and passive design across all stages of design/technical architecture
- ability to lead, communicate, and influence architectural decision making through early design stages
- previous relevant experience in sustainable design and architecture and/or undergraduate or postgraduate degree in related field
- broad knowledge of sustainable design themes, current and developing international sustainability policy frameworks
- ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in the London Studio and remotely support projects in Hong Kong and Sydney
Desirable skills and experience:
- knowledge of environmental engineering themes and workings of current construction industry climate change challenges
- registered architect (ARB/RIBA) and/or engineer (CIBSE or equivalent)
- demonstrate experience with building simulation tools such as Grasshopper Plug-ins (Ladybug, Honeybee, etc.) and Embodied carbon plugin tool for Revit (such as OneClick LCA)
- an understanding of full lifecycle carbon analysis (RICS methodology, EN 15978 or equivalent) applicable to building and masterplan scale
