Open City London is looking for an education and empowerment programme coordinator to join its team in London.
Open City is seeking a coordinator to work across its education and empowerment programmes supporting children and young people to learn about city-making and pursue careers in design and the built environment.
Salary: £22,000 to £24,000 pro rata depending on experience
Contract type: permanent
Hours: four days per week. Open City principally operates a four day week. We think this role is a four-day position but are open to other proposals including job shares for the right candidates

Abstract
Open City makes London and its urban landscape more open, accessible and equitable. We help citizens of all backgrounds to understand and engage with how the city is designed and made and have a role in shaping its future.
Open City creates a significant positive social impact through its diverse range of programmes from staging the annual Open House Festivals, to creating year-round educational initiatives and fostering critical dialogue and organising cultural events. As a result of Open City’s work, millions of people have learned about their city and explored boroughs and neighbourhoods they had never previously visited. Through our education and empowerment programmes, thousands of children and young people, in particular from under-represented communities, have been supported to learn about, and pursue careers in, architecture and city-making professions.
Open City is now in a period of exciting change and growth. The charity is embarking on an adventurous new year which will see it expand its education and empowerment programmes launching new course of it’s celebrated Accelerate programme supporting teenagers from under-represented backgrounds and new key stage 3 and 4 programmes in schools led by the the Open City head of education and empowerment, Sarah Phillips. We are looking for a dynamic and proactive programme coordinator to support the small core education and empowerment team in organising, delivering and evaluating education and empowerment programmes for young people of all ages throughout the year.
The role
The education coordinator is an exciting new role supporting Open City’s growing portfolio of youth and education programmes
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing administrative support to the in-house team of educators as well as to teachers, students and families across London in the following areas:
- a series of creative workshops for young children at the annual Open House Festival in September
- a collaborative KS2 programme working with architects and built environment professionals in London primary schools (both mainstream and SEND)
- new KS3 and KS4 programmes – planned for 2022, needing efficient and dynamic support
- accelerate – Open City’s KS5 programme for individuals interested in future careers in architecture and the built environment. In 2022, it will expand to offer three cohorts at three different London university venues
The person.
We are looking for someone who:
- is familiar with UK school curriculum and has the confidence to work closely with teachers and students of all ages
- will bring innovative and creative thinking around increased engagement and in supporting the development of our new education-led opportunities
- has an interest in the architecture and heritage of London and its built environment and shares in Open City’s core values that this should be open and accessible to all
- has very strong organisational skills
- is confident in the use of the Google suite to build a robust support system to allow for the accurate reporting and greater scaling of our education projects
- is happy to work as part of a small team and to engage with the hands-on approach of all staff at this small but dynamic charity
- is happy and able to attend events in the evening and on weekends. Many of Open City’s programmes with young people take place outside of school hours. The charity offers a TOIL policy to enable flexibility with working hours
Main duties and responsibilities:
- to maintain and grow an active database of schools and students and foster long-term relationships with design professionals, teaching staff and young people
- to manage feedback from events and workshops to allow the team to refine activities appropriately
- to update the education pages of the Open City website on a regular basis
- to participate in school/student workshops and visits
- where relevant, to help create and supply materials to add meaningful value to teachers throughout the school year and across subjects
- to help in the production of material for use by parents, corporate and council partners and funders
- to work in conjunction with Open City colleagues to ensure maximum reach for the education activities, to the largest possible relevant audience including writing and sending email newsletters, creating and posting social media updates and photographing education events
- to work In conjunction with Open City colleagues to support fundraising efforts including helping to compile reports and evaluations for funders and proposal for sponsors and grant-givers
- to work with colleagues to ensure that all costs associated with Open City’s education and empowerment programmes are properly managed and recorded
- to assist coordination, planning and operation of education programmes
- to communicate with relevant external parties (schools, teachers, universities, professional practices etc) regarding operation of education programmes
- actively engage with and demonstrate an interest in the work and mission of Open City
- support and collaborate with the Open City team across various programmes and events where necessary
- contribute to the overall curation of Open City and it’s programmes, proposing ideas, speaking on behalf of the charity and actively contributing to the development of the charity’s operations
- take an active role in improving Open City on behalf of the staff who work there and the audience it serves
Desirable:
- experience writing and managing basic budgets
- proficient in the use of Adobe InDesign
- own laptop from which to work remotely or in the office
