Technical design and compliance lead
at Gort Scott

Gort Scott is looking for an architect to take on the role of technical design and compliance lead for its London practice.

Role overview

Technical design and compliance lead is a new and important role in Gort Scott. It is a holistic design and technical role, with responsibility for overseeing the process of building regulations and technical compliance for projects and the submissions needed to gain approvals. This role has been prompted by the Building Safety Act but is nevertheless an integrated design and management role. Appreciating that this is a new role, and the BSA is new legislation, this is a role into which you can grow, while influencing its direction.

You will be involved in many projects in the office, which include diverse typologies, scales and types of clients. You will help to guide decisions where they are informed by aspects of compliance, attending internal design and technical reviews and attending external PTMs and DTMs.

You will be an experienced architect, with at least five years’ professional practice experience since qualification, with experience of running projects through all work stages, including during construction.

You will have a keenness to get into the details of designs, to keep abreast of changes to regulations and how these changes impact our designs. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of Gort Scott’s design ethos and management systems, supporting the senior management team by disseminating these through the practice.

You will be supported in your role by our technical director, senior management and project architects, as achieving technical compliance is a collective effort. Working with High-Risk Buildings (HRBs) we may also be supported by an external consultancy. You will be willing to take the exam for a place on the RIBA principal designer register.

Gort Scott

Gort Scott is an architecture and urban design practice with a focus on how buildings and places create the setting for connections between people. We are attuned to working and thinking at different scales, from one-off houses to planning pieces of the city and in both the public and private sectors. We are inspired by the contexts in which we work and develop propositions that resonate with them.

We are committed to working urgently to make the massive changes needed to end the built environment’s contribution to the climate and ecological emergency. This is integral to our wider purpose to create healthy environments for better connections between people, now and for the future. Additionally, we are acutely aware of the lack of diversity within the industry at all levels and actively encourage diversity across everything that we do.

We recognise the link between equality and quality, both in our practice and in the projects that we design. At our self-built Bermondsey studio, we have grown to an international community of over 35 members within a gender-diverse team. We are members of the London Practice Forum and Londonon, collectives for collaboration, research and knowledge exchange. Social and environmental goals are incorporated in our work at all stages both internally and externally.

The studio has won a number of awards including Wallpaper Best Private House, an AJ Retrofit Award, NLA Mayor’s Prize, a Civic Trust Award, RIBA National Award and shortlisted for the Architect of The Year Award.
