Urban designer
at Camden Council
Camden Council is seeking an urban designer to join its team in London.
About us
Camden is the most diverse and characterful London Borough stretching from Covent Garden to Hampstead Heath and including Bloomsbury, Camden Town, Euston and King’s Cross. More than half the borough is within conservation areas but We Make Camden sets an ambitious agenda for growth and expectation to harness the benefits for our communities.
The Council is using its significant land ownership to deliver some of this growth through its Community Investment Programme (CIP), investing £2.3 billion to deliver 4,850 new homes (1,800 affordable), improvements to schools and building or refurbishing 9,000m2 of community space.
Design and Place is a multi-disciplinary team that provides proactive planning and urban design advice to the Council as landowner, developer, planning authority and highway authority. Working collaboratively, it creates, shapes and implements the vision for the borough and particularly for the areas of significant change through the production of planning frameworks, site-specific briefs and advice to development management, housing delivery and highways.

This will involve a range of skill sets from the production of visions and frameworks that will shape the major areas of change in the borough, to providing high quality urban design advice to development management, housing delivery and transport.
The ability to produce plans, graphics, images and documents of exceptional quality is essential along with the ability to critique and direct proposals from developers and their architects.
This is an opportunity to positively influence growth in a London borough that demands and delivers some of the best new development in the country.
Key responsibilities:
- to provide urban design expertise, diagrams, images and concepts to support the council’s area based regeneration programme
- to work with development management officers to influence positive design outcomes through the planning pre-application process
- to work with CIP on the delivery of regeneration projects across the borough

- to produce high quality documents and presentations to promote the work of the team and the service
- to manage projects within the ‘Raising Design Quality’ agenda including the Camden Design Awards and the Camden Design Review Panel
In return, you can expect a great range of benefits including a fantastic pension scheme. We also recognise and reward high performance and salary progression is based on individual performance.
Make it work for you. Make it your Camden.
