Asif Khan Studio is hiring a project architect to join its team in London.

Asif Khan Studio is a design practice working across disciplines, from public artworks and installations to large-scale cultural and civic architecture in the UK and internationally. We are seeking a talented and motivated Project Architect to join our East London studio.

The studio has a strong design ethos rooted in curiosity, collaboration and craft. We work hands-on, supported by a fully equipped workshop and digital fabrication tools, enabling ideas to evolve through making.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in the technical delivery of a significant refurbishment project, working closely with the design team, consultants, specialist contractors and client representatives during the construction phase.

We are particularly interested in candidates with proven experience delivering complex refurbishment projects through RIBA Stage 5 under Construction Management procurement routes.

The role:

  • lead and coordinate architectural packages through RIBA Stage 5
  • take day-to-day responsibility for the architectural delivery of key work packages during construction
  • manage the delivery of a complex existing building refurbishment project under a construction management contract
  • produce, review and coordinate detailed construction information, technical drawings and specifications
  • respond to site queries, RFIs and contractor design coordination requirements
  • review contractor submittals, shop drawings, samples and mock-ups
  • work closely with the Construction Manager, trade contractors and consultant team to ensure design intent is maintained through construction
  • attend and contribute to site meetings, inspections and progress reviews
  • inspect works on site and monitor quality, compliance and workmanship
  • monitor programme, technical compliance and coordination across multiple work packages
  • support the resolution of site conditions and unforeseen issues typical of refurbishment and existing-building

Requirements

  • ARB-registered architect (or equivalent)
  • minimum three years’ post-Part 3 experience
  • demonstrable experience contributing to or leading project delivery through RIBA Stage 5
  • experience delivering refurbishment, adaptive reuse and/or heritage projects, with an interest in working on complex existing buildings
  • experience working within complex procurement and construction delivery environments. Experience of Construction Management procurement and delivery is beneficial
  • proven experience coordinating consultants, specialist subcontractors and contractor-led design information
  • excellent understanding and application of UK Building Regulations, Approved Documents and relevant British Standards
  • strong knowledge of technical compliance, coordination and quality assurance during construction
  • experience reviewing contractor submittals, shop drawings, samples and mock-ups
  • experience inspecting works on site and reporting on quality and compliance
  • excellent technical detailing skills and understanding of construction methodologies
  • advanced Revit skills, including BIM coordination and production of construction information
  • experience with Rhino is beneficial
  • excellent attention to detail and commitment to design quality during delivery
  • confident communicator with clients, consultants, contractors and specialist trades
  • highly organised, proactive and capable of managing multiple workstreams
  • fluency in spoken and written English

Desirable:

  • experience working within occupied buildings or live-site environments
  • experience with cultural or public-sector projects
  • knowledge of quality assurance, site inspection and contract administration processes
  • knowledge of, or experience working on, Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs) and an understanding of the requirements of the Building Safety Act and associated regulatory processes
