Residential job captain
at Framestudio
Framestudio is looking for a residential job captain to join its team in California, USA.
Framestudio is on the hunt for a sharp, fresh thinking project architect to join our downtown Oakland studio. We are a design-focused office and are looking for candidates who possess strong design, production and project management skills that are paired with an affable, charming personality that our clients will respond positively to.
The position can be distilled into three key roles
Design
Working closely with the principal, you will establish a design direction for the project, translating the clients brief into a compelling, thoughtful design.
You will be responsible for developing the design direction into a working scheme for presentation to our clients.
Production
Depending on the size of the project, you will be solely responsible for producing the working drawings, coordinating consultants, materials and detailing to bring the project to fruition. On larger projects, you will work as part of a team.
Project and client management
Management and communication with key players of each project is an important role of this position. You will be the primary point of contact with the clients, contractors and other consultants. You will be tasked to manage the project’s progress, keep the clients and principal updated, manage deadlines, and overall fees. You will participate in client meetings on-site and at the office.
Your qualifications:

- licensed in the state of California is preferred, but not necessary
- five-ten years of high-end, residential experience

- be familiar with materials, methods, and details associated with high-end modernist residential work
- has a methodical and organised approach to workflow and deadlines
- ability to multitask on multiple projects, prioritise and manage tasks against deadlines and other metrics. Flowthrough and resourcefulness are important attributes to have in this challenging construction climate

Why work for us?
For over fifteen years, the director of Framestudio has focused on creating carefully conceived, simple, unassuming spaces to live, work and relax in. We are influenced by work from overseas, from Europe to Australia, we gather ideas and aesthetics and reinterpret them for our local clientele. Our strengths lie in updating and reimagining midcentury homes, as well as building unique new homes to passive house standards.
Our work has received numerous accolades from local and national publications.
We recently completed the refurbishment of a Joseph Esherick demonstration house in the Sea Ranch, a suburban poolhouse addition clad in cedar with a marine plywood interior, as well as an update of an estate in Alamo by mid-century architect Henry Hill. Our current workload consists of projects of all sizes; a geodesic dome Sonoma county, additions to a mid-century ranch home, updating a ski cabin near Tahoe, and a modernist addition to a 1910 cottage on the Peninsula. We believe our office culture is unique; where humour, passion for good design, travel and exposure design are all highly valued. We also value life outside of work, managing our workload to avoid working late evenings and weekends.
In addition to competitive wages, 100% paid health benefits, commuter benefits, and travel grants, we offer:
- the opportunity for growth within the firm
- vibrant downtown Oakland office location one block from 12th Street BART
- we work two half-day Fridays per month
- referral bonus for projects brought into the firm
