Hill Holt Wood is looking for a design ranger to join its team in Lincolnshire, UK.

Salary: £18,512

Two-year fixed-term contract.

40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm with occasional weekend working required (on rota basis).

24 days holiday entitlement plus bank holidays.

Overview

Hill Holt Wood is a nationally recognised and award-winning environmental social enterprise. It currently employs 34 full and part-time rangers and is engaged in a wide range of activities including the education of young people, extensive forestry operations, contracts with the local council, eco-construction, both design and build (Design: HHW), and events and hire, including the Hive Café. It has enjoyed considerable success over the last 17 years and continues to build on its strong position focusing on sustainability, environmentalism, conservation and social awareness.

Design: HHW

Design: HHW operates under the umbrella of Hill Holt Wood and offers a variety of design services grounded in true sustainability. We aim to design and build small-scale projects that are environmentally, economically and socially sustainable, making use of recycled and renewable materials to create innovative, low-energy, high-performance buildings at an affordable price. Furthermore in addition to architectural design and construction the team are broadening their offer, looking to expand further into landscape, graphics and product design.

In terms of architecture, we do not accept projects without a strong sustainable agenda and we are particularly focussed on use of materials such as hemp, strawbales, timber and rammed earth.

Days spent on live construction projects and running of practical workshops will be a key feature of this role.

Job purpose:

  • the design ranger will be instrumental in the day-to-day operations of the design team and provide support to the current intern
  • oversee design projects, ensuring adherence to time schedules and delivery of quality design services
  • liaise with clients and deal with enquires and client meetings
  • the design ranger will be responsible for maintaining the website and social media accounts for Design: HHW
  • organise and deliver natural building qualifications when required (straw-bale building and log-house building) alongside other HHW rangers (training will be provided)
  • play an active role in live construction projects
  • aid development and progression of the design team
  • the post will involve working with the Hill Holt Ranger team, teachers, youth leaders and volunteers

Key skills:

  • degree in architecture/similar design profession
  • varied design experience and construction skills preferred
  • have a keen appreciation of sustainability
  • proficient in relevant design software (AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, SketchUp)
  • proficient hand drawing and presentation skills
  • possess excellent organisational and motivational skills
  • be able to enthuse, inspire and engage students
  • the role of a ranger at Hill Holt Wood is a multi-faceted one, and one that is physically demanding so a reasonable level of fitness is desirable
  • be able to deliver practical workshops
  • a full driving license is required
