Assistant manager

YOTEL is on the hunt for an assistant manager of design and feasibility to join its team in London.

Job purpose

An architectural and feasibility role working together with the VP development and strategy and senior design manager to support the team at initial design appraisal on global opportunities across multiple brands. This job will involve providing concept direction to in-country consultants, and design management of speculative projects from project inception to initial design concept stages.  This role will work with all regions including North America, Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

Duties will include the initial compilation of design appraisals for new development opportunities along with quick sketch proposals which meet the Yotel design brand guidelines, to support the development team in expanding the brands to new locations worldwide.

YOTEL is an affordable luxury hotel brand expanding rapidly with seven operating hotels and 14 under construction with a goal of reaching 60 hotels by 2023.  The role will be a critical member of the growth and strategy team with significant growth potential in the brand.

Role and responsibilities:

  • project evaluations; assist global business development team in conducting design feasibilities for the in their appraisal of potential Yotel projects. All project evaluations will involve creative thinking to derive optimal room count, facilities mix and area programme without compromising the quality of the guests’ experience and overall performance of the property. Projects will encompass site and desktop evaluations for conversions, renovations and new construction projects.  The applicant should be capable of providing both hand sketch and 2D CAD layouts, elevations, sections etc.
  • document review; reviewing concept drawings and/or specification submittals for brand compliance. This involves composing written recommendation and approval documents for internal and external publication
  • lead the compilation and management of an international hotel planning code database and updating at a timely interval
  • assist the development team in certain administrative functions such as copying, filing, scheduling conference calls, preparing meeting minutes, preparing design review responses, and scheduling feasibility meetings

Qualifications and education requirements:

  • a recognised architectural degree. RIBA II/III qualification or equivalent
  • around one/two years of relevant experience working in the architectural industry with particular exposure to the hotel/ serviced apartments, residential or student accommodation sectors
  • a broad design portfolio with an analytical approach which demonstrates clear conceptual skills and a technical understanding of all phases of the construction process
  • fluent in both spoken and written English

Mandatory skills:

  • competence to draft simple freehand sketches
  • ability to use AutoCAD is essential for this role
  • aptitude to effectively handle multiple projects. This role involves a broad range of tasks which run concurrently
  • ability to work un-pressured and to tight deadlines
  • availability to travel as required

Preferred skills:

  • effective communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely express ideas both verbally, in writing, and graphically
  • excellent interpersonal skills that build trust and instill confidence in order to motivate and influence others
  • experience working with Adobe Suite (Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator) and SketchUp is beneficial
  • ability to take initiative to identify, prioritise and implement all elements required for team to fulfil responsibilities in accordance with core strategic goals
  • commercial thinking skills, including ability to derive interesting architectural solutions to a brief
  • ability to collaborate with others and act in an objective manner in order to effectively solve problems and stay on track towards accomplishing organisational goals
  • experience working with Microsoft Office Suite; Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • general knowledge of accessibility, planning codes and technical requirements as it relates to hospitality architecture and design
  • absolute discretion and confidentiality regarding sensitive information
  • ability to have fun
