Finkernagel Ross is hiring a hospitality project runner to join its studio in London.

Finkernagel Ross is seeking a versatile, highly design-conscious project runner with design background, to design and deliver a number of restaurant projects in the UK and abroad currently in the pipeline. These projects range from a boutique wine bar to a concept design for a new restaurant, along with a pilot project, as well as a number of roll-out casual dining restaurants.

Strong appreciation and understanding of high-quality design, and sensitivity and enthusiasm for both roll-out concepts and bespoke designs is essential, as is enjoying work in this sector and thriving on the fast-paced nature of these types of projects. Proven experience in restaurant design and project running (min. five years). ARB registration, experience in hospitality sectors (hotels, etc.) and cost consultancy skills a plus.

Role description

As an ambitious, talented leader of the design team you will be responsible for the overall development and successful management and implementation of hospitality projects (in particular restaurant fit-outs) under the guidance of the associate and (where appropriate and required) with support from architectural assistants and junior designers.

Key responsibilities:

  • proactively take responsibility for the successful project implementation and project development within the project programme, milestones, targets set and exceeding client expectations
  • successful team management (internal and external) to ensure successful project delivery and client satisfaction
  • understand and provide a positive and meaningful contribution to the design of the project

Project management:

  • experience with procurement, programming, coordinating statutory consents and licences
  • able to provide full “architect’s service” as described in the RIBA Plan of Work and the “Standard Form of Agreement for the Appointment of an Architect”
  • able to grasp and understand technical, operational and regulatory aspects and constraints of the restaurant industry
  • able to fully understand the design project, business model, client brief and aspirations, statutory context, project programme and overall procurement strategy
  • able to fully understand the roles of the project team (internal and external), their interaction and their necessary contributions to the project
  • oversee the preparation and development of, and sometimes participate in (depending on the size of the project team), where required, NBS specifications, drawings, models, images and other documents relating to the design
  • ability to be client-facing to include effective and professional communication with the client (and project team) at all times and advise on all project-related matters
  • manage all aspects of project management including budgeted time and project programme, deadlines and milestone for projects they are involved in
  • to liaise with, and coordinate members of the external and internal design team and other associated organisations, companies or consultants
  • to independently administer the building contract and take measures to ensure the delivery of the project
  • record and keep accurate and timely records for project administration including drawing revision schedules, client change requests, meeting minutes, etc.
  • ability to arrange, chair and lead project meetings inclusive of the client and external consultants
  • oversight and responsibility for the architect’s role in the coordination and integration of the project information
  • independently instruct and lead up to two junior staff assigned to assist in the delivery of the project and ensure all work is adequately checked before being issued externally to those higher up in the project team and outside parties

  • ability and willingness to assist with the management and mentoring of architectural assistants and architects in the practice
  • able to deal with the pressures of fast-pace delivery of multiple restaurants in UK and abroad (in conjunction with our Hamburg office)

Qualifications/skills:

  • UK or international professional qualification; minimum of five years successful job running experience
  • ability to successfully independently manage one to two medium-sized (up to £1 million construction value) projects at the same time
  • proven track record for: the design and delivery of numerous successful projects from concept to completion; managing entire design teams and dealing with contractors and consultants; ability to present a portfolio of high-profile work
  • evidence of a good design understanding (eg. design portfolio)
  • evidence of a good technical understanding (e.g. detailed construction drawings)
  • good drawn, written and verbal communication and organisational skills
  • experience in designing all or part of a project
  • ability to understand and formulate design decisions
  • ability to use a variety of media in the development and documentation of a design project
  • ability to use relevant software (Revit (desirable), AutoCad, Sketchup, PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Rhino, Microsoft Project)
