Job description:
As a designer at Studio Olafur Eliasson (SOE), you will be an important part of the encounters team, working within the studio’s exhibition and project design and planning group. Your work will focus on the development of exhibitions, temporary installations, and projects in public space. Encounters is shaped by a dynamic team of specialists who focus on where art meets people, including the creation of exhibitions and temporary projects as well as communication, archival, documentation and digital development.
Working within the encounters team, tasks will include conducting research and concept design via graphic studies, digital models, visualisations, and presentations. Your work will include the translation and synthesis of research and spatial experiments into realisable projects, able to be delivered within set schedules and budgets. Your work will include supervision of a project through its fabrication and realisation on site.
You will work both independently and under the direction of team leaders, collaborating with other designers to translate various projects into built reality. We are looking for a team player, who is highly motivated and committed to their work, and curious to acquire new knowledge, skills and abilities.
Your skills:
- excellent design skills and sensitivity for aesthetics
- deep knowledge of contemporary art
- ability to think analytically and conceptually
- strong ability to develop conceptual design and planning packages, and work as part of a team to develop clear and inspiring presentation as well as technical drawings
- becoming involved at any stage of the process and able to effectively input across all stages of the design and realisation process
- ability to utilize 3D modelling tools (primarily Rhino) and programming tools (eg Grasshopper) in the research and design process
- ability to work with a high level of accuracy
- strong eye for technical feasibility and details
- ability to research materials and fabrication methods as required
- liaise with and build strong relationships with local fabricators and studio collaborators
- strong communication and organization skills, working well independently and within a small design team
- strength in developing and maintaining project schedules and budgets
- strong organisation and time management skills, able to independently structure your time and meet deadlines
- two plus years’ of experience in an art, design or architecture office
- advanced knowledge of Rhinoceros 3D, functional knowledge of Grasshopper and AutoCAD
- confident working in Adobe Programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
Desirables:
- professional degree in architecture, industrial design, product design, or similar field is preferred
- strong knowledge of construction, materials, and systems
- image editing skills and a sensibility for graphic design and layout
Language requirements:
- fluent English is required
- proficiency in German (both written and spoken) is desirable
- proficiency in other languages a plus

We work with Eliasson to experiment, develop, and install artworks, projects, and exhibitions as well as to communicate and contextualise his work.
