Head of sustainability
at Hassell

Hassell is seeking a head of sustainability to join its team in any of its offices in Australia, Asia, the UK and the US.

About us

With nine design studios spread around the world, chances are you’ve seen our work before.

We work across architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and urban design – a rich multi-disciplinary mix of skills and perspectives that unlocks the economic, social and cultural value of projects.

We combine our creative design expertise with capabilities in strategy, research, technology, and experience design, and we regularly collaborate with experts and partners from further afield.

Through our work, we’re trying to build a more inclusive, sustainable future for communities – and create a more socially and ecologically resilient world.

We believe design has the power to move us from ‘the new normal’ to ’the new beautiful’ – reconnecting people and reimagining how places can be designed to sustain us and our environment.

Designing for people and the planet

The need to contribute to a better, more inclusive, and resilient future is more urgent than ever. And as designers, we’re uniquely placed to inspire and educate others and demonstrate leadership in environmentally sustainable design for the benefit of people and the planet.

Our practice is committed to taking action to make a positive and measurable impact, with the strong support of staff across our global network of studios.

Sustainability is already deeply embedded in what we do but we want to take the next step in reaching our aspirational targets across 12 defined areas of focus in our whole-of-practice Sustainability Strategy.

Our Sustainability Strategy articulates our vision for sustainability at Hassell and includes ambitious commitments to reducing the impacts of our operations and projects and contribute social value through our work.

About the role

We’re looking for a head of sustainability to evolve and drive the implementation of the Hassell sustainability strategy. You’ll need to create a roadmap to guide the whole firm to achieve the stated targets included in the strategy and drive progress and innovation in each of the identified areas of focus including efficient use of resources; sustainable places; whole of life thinking; and social responsibility.

In this role you will work with the sustainability working group, sustainability champion network, heads of design and operations executive to swiftly move into implementing our commitments to:

  • deeply embed sustainability into our practice
  • make sustainability central, tangible and visible in our design and decision-making processes
  • invest in sustainability-focused research, training, and specialist expertise
  • share our knowledge with the wider industry to inspire and enable change

You will achieve this by inspiring and influencing all employees to engage with sustainability; embedding sustainable design thinking into the design process and participating in design reviews, sharing knowledge, research and sustainable innovation.

About you

Your passion for sustainability and making a positive impact in the world has driven you to this role.

You should have a broad knowledge base in sustainability and ideally, deep expertise in sustainable design. You’re engaged with the industry and at the forefront of sustainable design practice and thinking.

In previous roles, you’ve leveraged your industry-leading knowledge to provide advice to senior leadership teams and implement national or global sustainability strategy frameworks.  You have an ability to explain complex sustainability issues to engage a variety of key internal and external stakeholders including clients.

An inspirational knowledge leader, you are able to effectively engage with employees across all levels and locations to lead the up-skilling and embedding of sustainable design skills. Your passion and ideas will help mobilise internal stakeholders, engage external audiences and represent the organisation in key external forums.

The head of sustainability is a global role that can be located in any of our studio locations across Australia, Asia, the UK, and the US.
