Position overview
New England Innovation Academy seeks an inspiring educator who will teach students integrated design and entrepreneurship, using human-centered design as a fundamental process to develop students’ empathy, passion, and curiosity. This role will help students think deeply about the world through various lenses of human needs, positive societal impact, environmental sustainability and enable them to take action through real-world, hands-on projects.
The position requires maintaining a full teaching load, serving as an advocate to a small cohort of students, and actively supporting various student life activities. We seek a dynamic teacher who inspires students and works collaboratively and creatively with colleagues in various curricular areas and divisions. Candidates should be passionate about teaching middle and high school students.
Teachers at NEIA encourage collaborative teamwork in the classroom, teaching students to communicate effectively and thoughtfully, justify their reasoning, and consider multiple perspectives when solving problems. Teachers invest in the life of the school by participating in the advisory program, social and emotional learning, weekly department meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings, anti-bias training, residential life, and any aspects that support the student experience.
Under the general supervision and guidance of the Head of Innovation and Head of Teaching & Learning, this teacher is responsible for preparing lesson plans, educating students, and collaborating with colleagues. The Design/IS Teacher’s duties include assessing student work and performance, providing feedback, documenting student progress, and assigning extended learning and practice. The Design/IS Teacher must be able to command the classroom and reach students with an engaging project-based curriculum. The Design/IS Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential and accomplish the learning goals of NEIA.
Duties include:
- embodying NEIA’s principles of empathy, equity, personalization, authentic work, and collaboration in all work activities and actions
- creating daily lesson plans with project-based assignments connected to the human experience that are engaging, educational, and exciting for the students
- planning, preparing, and delivering instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
- incorporating goals, competencies, and objectives into lesson plans in ways that directly apply to the student’s life
- achieving school and course-wide performance goals for every student in the class
- grading assignments and independent work regularly to keep students updated on how they are doing
- identifying students struggling with learning, emotional problems, or situations at home and finding them the resources they need
- host and collaborate with colleagues to work in partnership on curriculum content planning and implementation
The ideal candidate possesses the following competencies:
- expert on human-centered and other design methodologies, both in theory and practice
- experience in teaching and practicing entrepreneurship
- knowledge of making, prototyping, materials, and methods
- ability to incorporate goals, competencies, and objectives into lesson plans in ways that directly apply to student’s lives
- ability to work with professionalism, discretion, sound judgment, equity, honesty, and personal accountability at all times
- Proficient knowledge of teaching strategies and methods
- critical thinking skills
- ability to create a welcoming and supportive community for a diverse study body
- strong written and verbal communication skills
- exceptional administrative and organization skills
- uses technology effectively in teaching, learning, and administrative functions
- ability to efficiently and effectively manage the time of self and others
Required education and experience:
- bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree a plus
- at least three years’ of teaching experience in a residential or day school setting is a plus
This ten-month, full-time faculty position begins in January 2022.
