Local Works Studio is seeking an architect/landscape architect to join its team in East Sussex, UK.

Local Works is a pioneering small practice, with an innovative approach to the design of landscapes and buildings, focusing on the creative and sustainable use of local resources.
We take a holistic and hands-on approach to research, design and making, where each process informs the other. We are currently working on an exciting variety of groundbreaking projects – public parks, regenerative landscape management for construction, circular economy consultancy, material invention for low carbon construction and participatory design. We are a steadily growing small team, based in rural East Sussex, working across the UK and internationally. We regularly collaborate with leaders in the fields of architecture, landscape and sustainable design.

About the role
We are looking to employ a highly versatile designer for the built environment, to lead on technical and delivery phases across the studio’s portfolio of projects, as well as building our capacity for research and best practice around circular economy for construction. This role would suit a landscape architect, or architect, with an excellent knowledge of materials and their application, as well as a good understanding of landscape systems. The ideal candidate will have proven experience and enthusiasm for new thinking and methods of sustainable construction and circular economy. The role requires curiosity and creativity, as well as rigorous attention to detail and skill, in order to apply and develop our alternative working methodologies, designed to facilitate low carbon construction. The successful applicant will be highly collaborative, ready to learn from and support others, as well as facilitating a high level of stakeholder engagement. They will be a central figure in our small studio, with an ambition to help shape the growing practice.
Essential:
- over three years’ experience in practice
- exceptional creativity and design ability
- excellent knowledge of construction materials and their application
- a good understanding of ecological systems and horticultural principles
- proven report writing skill and experience
- experience of projects at all stages, including planning applications, tendering and site works
- thorough competence in 2D and 3D CAD software, including AutoCAD and Adobe suite
- proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- good digital, hand drawing and graphic design skills
- confident communication and enthusiasm for collaboration
- experience in managing others and excellent organisational skills
- a proactive approach and ability to work independently
- willingness to undertake self-directed learning to supplement knowledge
Beneficial:
- proficiency in Vectorworks
- understanding and experience of BIM
- experience in hands-on construction or landscaping
- understanding of embodied carbon calculation and whole life carbon analysis
This job description reflects the core activities of the role although there will be changes in emphasis of duties as required from time to time. The successful candidate will have an open and flexible approach to their work.

Conditions:
- six month contract, to be extended to permanent position upon successful completion of probationary period
- full time position (37 hours per week), flexible by negotiation
- LWS supports flexible and remote working, however there would be an expectation for a minimum presence in our East Sussex studio of three days per week
