Maker and metalworker
at Cake Industries
Cake Industries is seeking a maker and metalworker to join its team in London.
Cake Industries design, engineer, fabricate and make beautiful things; from sculpture, bridges and staircases to architectural pavilions. Working with the finest materials and taking a design-focused approach to all projects, we work with architects, designers, artists and contractors to bring concepts to life.
We are currently looking one to two experienced makers to join our team.
Role:
- you will have specialist knowledge and practical fabrication experience with a range of materials and processes with an emphasis on steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminium
- you will carry out fabrication on a range of projects both in the workshop and on site
- you will uphold high standards of craft and workmanship, demonstrating awareness of quality management across varying projects and contexts from structural fabrication to detailed metalworking
- you will carry out high quality fabrication and finishing on a range of complex and interesting projects
- you will have a positive attitude and enjoy problem solving within a creative and collaborative environment
- you will ensure that that your own work is carried out efficiently
- you will maintain high standards of health and safety in your work both in our workshop and on-site
- you will act as a mentor to junior and apprentice metalworkers and makers
- you will report to the workshop manager and the directors
Salary
Based on experience and competence but expected to be in the range £28,000-£34,000 per annum, with opportunities for this to grow with the business.
Job type
Short-term (three month) contract, five days a week. A salaried package including pro-rata annual leave and statutory benefits.
Based on workload and performance there is a possibility to extend this contract further.
Essential skills:
- minimum of four years’ experience in a relevant environment
- knowledge of fabrication and making in steel
- metal forming and cutting
- excellent communication skills
- ability to read and understand engineering drawings
- knowledge of and implementation of good health and safety practice
- exemplary time management and an organised and coherent approach to your work
Desirable skills:
- knowledge of fabrication and making in a wide range of materials, including particularly stainless steel
- welding (MIG or TIG or braising) and weld preparation skills
- appropriate certification for welding skills and experience with coded welding
- site welding experience including stick welding
- finishing and patination skills in steel, brass, and aluminium.
- knowledge of leading an effective small team
- experience of working both in a workshop and on-site installation.
- machining or lathe skills
- CSCS Card and/or formal health and safety training
- valid UK driving licence
