Royal Museums Greenwich is seeking a design manager to join its team in London.

Salary: £48,000 pa

Core hours: 36 per week, permanent

Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. The design manager is essential to delivering an ambitious programme including temporary exhibitions, transformational projects designed to improve the visitor experience and promote access to our collections a gallery enhancement programme and public-facing interior design projects. You will be responsible for ensuring design work for RMG projects is delivered on time, to budget, is fit-for-purpose and is designed to meet the needs of our defined audiences. You will work alongside two senior exhibitions project managers reporting to the head of exhibitions and design and take senior responsibility for the creative delivery of exhibition projects alongside managing the design studio, a multi-disciplinary team of 3D and 2D design and digital experts.

Key elements of your role will include developing a distinctive and consistent design approach across our sites, developing effective relationships with external design agencies, providing insight and support to the exhibition project managers, and supporting the exhibition and spatial designer (ESD) and graphic designer (GD) in presenting design treatments, facilitating creative workshops and ensuring that key stakeholder requirements are met.

You will need to demonstrate extensive experience of designing/delivering permanent and temporary exhibitions (£100k) in the museum and heritage sector, experience of working with audience evaluation processes with a good understanding of content development, interpretation planning, visitor engagement and how this translates into contemporary, high quality exhibition design and delivery. You will have excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication and presentation skills including the ability to foster effective cross-departmental and external stakeholder relationships at all levels.
