Director of Bachelor of Design
at University of Melbourne
There is a vacancy for a director of the Bachelor of Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of the University of Melbourne in Melbourne.
The Faculty is the leading educational and research institution within the Asia-Pacific region engaging in scholarship centred on the comprehensive design and realisation of inhabited environments. With nearly 200 staff and around 3000 students, as well as a longstanding international reputation for excellence in built environment and urban research, it offers an undergraduate degree program enabling majors in architecture, landscape architecture, property, construction, and urban planning. The Faculty incorporates the Melbourne School of Design (MSD), which offers postgraduate courses in cognate subject areas.
Presently, the Faculty is seeking an accomplished professional to become the director of the Bachelor of Design programme, ensuring sound academic leadership and the articulation of a distinct vision and strategy as the driver for the broad and continued success of the degree. Holding a variety of responsibilities, the director is critical to planning, educational, student, marketing and recruitment functions and liaises widely with a variety of external stakeholders to enhance the degree’s profile and considerable industry standing.
Reporting to the custodial dean, the director plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing the program’s academic standards and supports best-practice teaching methods to ensure a consistent and high-quality student experience. As a scholar of considerable pedigree, the director is vital to supporting faculty staff in the development and delivery of the program, whilst also maintaining an active teaching role, including in the degree itself.
The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated record of success in university-based teaching and learning, a strong and active research profile or equivalent practice-based experience, as well as finely honed leadership and academic performance management skills. The ability to plan and deliver complex programs and services at both the strategic and operational level, along with effective interpersonal, communications, and conflict resolution skills will be essential to success in the role.
