Interior designer/technical designer
at A New Day
A New Day is hiring an interior designer or a technical designer to join its team in southeast London.
A New Day is a small but fast-growing interior design studio, based in southeast London.
We’re looking for a designer with strong technical skills to join us initially on a freelance basis. Note that there may be scope for this to develop into a permanent role. If you’ve got the right skill set and portfolio to showcase it, we’re less concerned about how many years you’ve been in the industry.
The right candidate will have passionate attention to detail and bring a high level of capability and interest in technical design as well as the creative side.
Technical and key skills required:
- proficient in Vectorworks and Sketchup, 2D and 3D
- strong technical and creative skills in Photoshop
- experience in 3D rendering would be highly advantageous but is not essential
- a working knowledge of Google Workspace (Sheets, Slides, Forms) is essential, along with confident use of Mac programmes (Keynote, Pages)
- a great eye for presentation layout and visual communication
Day-to-day tasks and responsibilities will involve, but are not limited to:
- producing detailed and accurate delivery drawings and specifications to include elevations and floor plans
- production of client and supplier-facing documentation, including joinery tender packs, lighting and power plans and various formats of design intent drawings to bring to life plans and ideas
- space planning – developing layouts and proposals
- FF&E specification and procurement – showing an excellent eye for detail, colour and materiality working to design concepts
- liaison with clients, collaborators and contractors to ensure the effective delivery of design plans
- support on-site as required
Key attributes of the right applicant:
- highly organised and detail-obsessed
- friendly, engaged and responsive
- excellent time management skills are essential, along with an ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines
- proactive and forward-thinking, able to work independently
- a confident communicator with partners including suppliers, architects, contractors and other designers
- ability to clearly communicate design intent through technical drawings
- an appetite and willingness to bring new ideas, challenge thinking and help maintain fresh approaches across the scope of our work
- good supplier and product knowledge is beneficial, but we’re open to applicants who have the technical skills but are still to build their knowledge
Why work with us?
We’re a small studio without hierarchy, meaning you’ll have scope to get involved with a bit of everything. The studio is growing, so if you’re hungry to develop and shape a role that has a big impact, then this could be for you.
While we’re small in size, we like to think we punch above our weight. All of our projects are of a significant scale, working on full-home renovations across London and beyond in collaboration with some of the best architects and construction professionals in the industry.
A taste of recently completed projects:
- four-bedroom apartment within the Barbican estate
- Grade II Listed villa in the heart of Hampstead Heath
And some on the drawing board at the moment:
- a second Grade II Listed home in Hampstead
- full renovation and reconfiguration of a large family home in Highgate
- a mews house in Marylebone
There is flexibility in the work pattern for this role and for the right person, but we’re looking for someone to be available two to four days per week for a minimum of 16 hours per week within standard office hours (9.30am-6.00pm). This would be a hybrid role with some time spent in the Studio in southeast London, on-site and working remotely – the exact mix would be dependent on work patterns, and client meeting schedules so a flexible approach would be expected.
