Assistant designer – spatial design and architecture

59 Productions is seeking an assistant designer for spatial design and architecture to join its team in London.
Contract type: 12-month fixed term and permanent contracts available, to be discussed with the applicant as part of the interview and appointment.
Reports to: senior designers.
Salary: £27,352 to £30,000 per annum.
Annual leave: 23 days plus eight bank holidays with one additional day for each full year with the company (up to ten days).
Key relationships: project design leads, project directors, art directors, senior designers, designers, producers and across all areas of the business.

The interview panel will include 59’s head of design, chief operating officer and other members of the team.
Our interviews are built as two way conversations to better understand each other’s work and aspirations and may include a task to better understand the candidate’s process.
We operate equal opportunity interviews and typically share the opening interview questions in advance with candidates. Interviews are held in person at our London studio in order for candidates to meet some of the team, however they can be arranged online if there are geographical considerations.

Overall purpose of the job
We are looking for new assistant designers with a spatial design and/or architecture background to join 59’s team. The role will work in our multidisciplinary design department to research, develop, refine and design responses to a broad slate of creative challenges across the company’s project portfolio.
59’s design team is made up of spatial designers, architects, video designers, animators, lighting and technical designers. You will apply your specific design skills in one (or more) of these areas collaboratively, across a number of projects to help realise our work.
The person in this role will have a strong interest in design for storytelling and an enthusiasm to work across live events such as performance, exhibition and pavilion design.
This role will suit someone early in their career designing for live performance or someone who has been working in another industry/context for some time and is looking to transfer their skills to 59’s work.

Person specification
Essential:
- demonstrable experience, education or training in spatial design, set design, product design and/or architecture
- an ability to communicate design ideas using analogue and digital drawing techniques
- a strong interest in interdisciplinary design and collaborating with other specialisms
- comfortable working to deadlines and under pressure
- an experienced collaborator and a strong communicator
- demonstrable 2D drafting (Vectorworks or AutoCAD)
- excellent 3D digital modelling skills (in particular in Rhino)
- good experience with Adobe software – especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
- experience with model making including hand made, laser cutting and 3D printing
- passionate about live performance and public arts projects
Desirable:
- computational design skills (especially Grasshopper)
- experience with using AI as part of a design process
- knowledge/understanding about other creative disciplines – particularly video design, animation, lighting, sound and programming
