Senior project architect

Timothy Hatton Architects is hiring an experienced senior project architect to join its team in London.

The role will include leading the refurbishment of a significant Grade 2* listed building in Mayfair.

Established over 35 years ago, the practice has built a reputation for work of the highest quality working closely in collaboration with clients at the highest end of both the commercial and residential sectors.

Our reputation has been achieved through the fine efforts of exceptional team members who understand what is required to conceive and deliver the work, while at the same time having strength in the necessary communication skills to be able to engage with the full spectrum of personalities encountered from the client to the construction workers.

Current projects have a value range between £5 million to £45 million including a commission for a globally renowned contemporary art gallery owner.

We are looking for an architect with a minimum of eight years’ post-Part 3 UK experience with proven experience in project running. The successful candidate will be leading a team on the refurbishment of a substantial Grade 2* building in Mayfair which will require knowledge and experience of both conservation work and new construction in the UK, excellent organisational and communication skills, strong technical knowledge, a passion for design and delivery and the ability to participate effectively with project teams.

This is a leadership role with the following key responsibilities

Project running:

  • lead projects through all RIBA work stages
  • manage workload and resource planning across the architectural team, carrying out regular reviews to assess priorities are being met
  • ensure design proposals meet all statutory requirements from the outset, including planning and building regulations
  • establish constructive professional relationships with and be the architectural key point of contact for clients, client representatives, project managers and other consultants within the project team
  • identify design risk and ensure design risk assessments are created and appropriately maintained to manage and mitigate risk
  • have a good awareness of the project budget and the impact of any design changes
  • liaise with site teams to ensure the delivery of the overall project during construction

Leading the architectural design team:

  • understand standards of best practice and provide guidance, advice and mentorship to the project design team of architects and designers to ensure these are met at all times
  • review drawing packages at all RIBA stages
  • demonstrate expertise at technical construction details, particularly Stage 4 RIBA packages
  • integrate the design team with the interiors and project management team, including reviewing and improving existing processes

The following professional attributes are required:

  • RIBA part 3 or equivalent qualification and ARB registered with eight plus years’ post-Part 3 experience delivering projects of a similar scale to completion
  • demonstrable experience managing projects across all RIBA work stages, particularly working at RIBA stages 4 and 5 in the UK with a thorough understanding of the entire construction process
  • proven technical expertise, including complex coordination skills and knowledge of current construction methods allied with residential conservation and planning experience (ideally with a strong background in listed buildings including the Grosvenor/Crown estates)
  • excellent knowledge of building standards and construction detailing including experience of the UK regulatory framework including current building regulations and CDM
  • detailed understanding of the responsibilities of specification writing, contract administration and experience of procurement processes for JCT construction contracts
  • experience of working effectively with input from a variety of sources including clients, client representatives, project management and consultant teams with the ability to problem solve and coordinate complex building solutions with external consultants
  • good knowledge and understanding of possible sustainable design solutions
  • experience working on high-end and sensitive historic refurbishments is essential
  • strong architectural team management skills with experience in leading and coordinating forward-thinking design teams
  • experience in confidently and clearly communicating and presenting design ideas/solutions to internal and external teams
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • excellent IT skills with knowledge and use of PC-based BIM, Revit, AutoCAD and NBS software

The package for this role includes a competitive salary negotiable based on experience, 20 days’ annual leave plus three days at Christmas and a range of benefits including pension contributions and healthcare plans.
