London, UK
Junior interior designer
at Mehrai Design
Mehrai Design is looking for a talented and highly motivated junior interior designer to join its London studio.
Location: Wimbledon, London
Contract: freelance
We are a small, design-led practice working across commercial, workplace, hospitality and residential interiors.
This is a hands-on role for someone who wants broad exposure to the design process and the opportunity to work closely with the founder and creative director across live projects.
We are looking for someone with a strong visual eye, good design judgement and excellent attention to detail. You should be equally interested in space planning, drawings, furniture, materials and finishes – and comfortable moving between creative and technical work.
The role will include:
- concept development and space planning
- plans, elevations and drawing production
- AutoCAD, Revit and SketchUp modelling
- client presentations and design development
- FF&E research, sourcing and specification
- materials, finishes and sample coordination
- product research and showroom visits
- site surveys and site visits
- checking dimensions and existing site information
- meeting notes and project coordination
- proofreading drawings, presentations, schedules and specifications
- checking product references, dimensions and technical information
- supporting projects from concept through to delivery
A good understanding of FF&E is important to the role. You should have a genuine interest in furniture, lighting, materials and finishes – with some understanding of how products are researched, selected and specified.
We value people who are naturally curious and thorough. You should notice when something does not look right, be prepared to question it – and take pride in producing clear and accurate work.
At the same time, this is a design role. A strong portfolio, good visual instincts and an understanding of proportion, composition, materiality and how spaces work are essential.
Freehand sketching is also useful, particularly as a quick way to communicate layouts, details and design ideas.
We are open to recently qualified designers as well as candidates with early professional experience.
What matters most is talent, curiosity, rigour, attention to detail and a genuine desire to become a very good designer.
This role would suit someone who enjoys being part of a small studio, wants responsibility early in their career and is prepared to work hard, learn quickly and contribute across different parts of a project.
Skills
Applicants should be proficient in:
- AutoCAD
- Revit
- SketchUp
- Photoshop
- Google Slides
- Microsoft Office
You should also be confident in:
- space planning
- producing clear plans and elevations
- FF&E and materials
- product research and specification
- written communication
- proofreading and checking
- working accurately with dimensions and project information
- taking clear and comprehensive meeting notes
- organising and following through actions
An understanding of the RIBA Plan of Work and some exposure to commercial, workplace, hospitality or residential interiors would be useful, but extensive professional experience is not essential.
Portfolio and CV
We want to see both visual ability and depth.
Your portfolio can include university, placement, freelance or professional work.
We would particularly like to see:
- concept development
- space planning
- plans and elevations
- AutoCAD and Revit work
- SketchUp modelling
- FF&E and material thinking
- product specification
- freehand sketches
- presentation work
- examples showing how a design developed rather than only finished images
Please make clear which elements of collaborative projects were personally produced by you.
Your CV is equally important. We are interested in placements, work experience, part-time roles, interests and achievements that give us a better understanding of how you work and what you might bring to a small studio.
Applicants must currently live in London, be available to work regularly from our Wimbledon studio and have unrestricted permission to work in the UK.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
