Freelance mid-weight interior designer
at Owl

Owl is seeking a freelance mid-weight interior designer to join its team in London/remotely.

Who we are

Owl is an interior design studio established in 2014 by Sophie van Winden and Simone Gordon, born from a shared love of joyful, daring design. Based in East London, we specialise in ‘positive design’ – spaces that are bold, sustainable, and full of colour, personality, and purpose.

Our work spans residential, commercial and hospitality projects, all crafted with meticulous attention to detail, a love of storytelling, and a commitment to creating interiors that enhance the lives of those who use them.

About the role

We’re looking for a mid-weight interior designer to join our creative team on a freelance basis. Starting at one to two days per week, there’s scope for this to grow based on workload and fit. The role is primarily remote (WFH), though applicants must be able to get to London easily for occasional studio days and site visits.

You’ll report to the directors and collaborate closely with our procurement team. You’ll be responsible for delivering FF&E schemes from concept to install – including scheming, sourcing, budgeting and styling.

What we’re looking for

You’re a confident, collaborative, detail-driven designer with a passion for interiors that surprise and delight. You bring a natural eye for art, colour, and composition, alongside the practical know-how to deliver high-quality projects from start to finish.

Requirements:

  • a degree or equivalent in Interior Design or a related creative field
  • a minimum of four years’ post-grad experience, with at least three years in luxury residential
  • demonstrable talent in styling, scheming, and spatial planning
  • excellent knowledge of FF&E suppliers, trade pricing and budget control
  • confident in client-facing settings – warm, professional, and great with people
  • self-motivated and proactive; can work independently and as part of a team
  • proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and Vectorworks
  • strong technical knowledge: joinery detailing, custom furniture, upholstery, etc.
  • highly organised, with the ability to effectively manage and prioritise multiple tasks across various projects and teams
  • an appreciation for art, antiques, and the history of design.
  • impeccable communication skills – both written and verbal

Responsibilities:

  • develop and present mood boards, concepts, layouts, and FF&E proposals
  • prepare design documentation, drawing packs, and materials boards
  • source and specify furnishings, finishes, lighting, and bespoke pieces
  • liaise with suppliers, makers, and contractors throughout the design process
  • attend site visits and oversee FF&E installations with our team
  • collaborate with the Owl team to ensure a seamless, joyful client experience
