Material Index is hiring a technical sustainability lead to join its team in London, UK.

Material Index is seeking a technical sustainability lead to join our growing material audit team. This role sits at the intersection of engineering expertise, sustainability strategy, and project delivery, providing the technical backbone that ensures our audits are both rigorous and impactful. As a technical consultant on the audit team, you will take responsibility for quality assurance, technical review, and client-facing project management, supporting the audit lead while mentoring auditors and surveyors in the team. You’ll play a key role in translating detailed building knowledge into clear strategies that help projects achieve ambitious reuse and low-carbon outcomes.

What you’ll do:

  • manage audit projects from scoping through to delivery, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met
  • provide technical expertise on building structures, assemblies, and reuse potential
  • conduct QA/QC reviews of material audits, reports, and datasets
  • act as a bridge between design teams and site surveyors, ensuring consistency and clarity
  • lead client-facing presentations and workshops with project teams
    Support the Audit Lead in developing methodologies and standards for the team
  • mentor junior auditors, providing guidance and training
  • contribute towards digital product development

This role is suited to someone with several years of experience in the built environment, likely from an engineering, surveying, sustainability, construction management or with architectural background who wants to apply their expertise to the challenges of sustainability and reuse.

Essential:

  • strong technical knowledge of UK building structures and construction methodologies with professional qualification or progress toward chartered status (e.g. engineering, sustainability surveying, or architecture)
  • strong interest in sustainability, reuse, and circular economy principles with knowledge of planning/BREEAM contexts
  • experience in project management and delivery within the built environment
  • ability to review and critique technical work with accuracy and clarity
  • excellent verbal and written communication for client-facing work

Desirable:

  • experience with Revit/BIM and digital workflows
  • familiarity with embodied carbon assessment or related sustainability frameworks
  • ability to produce clear, compelling data visualisations and graphics
