Senior architect

Carmody Groarke is looking for an experienced senior architect to join its London team.
The successful candidate will have ten plus years’ managing complex projects in a project architect role.
Role
As a senior architect, you will be responsible for the design and technical development of projects, day-to-day design decisions, project management and coordination and ensuring compliance with best practice design standards and statutory regulations. Depending on the practice’s needs, you may lead a project, manage a complex work package, or contribute specialised skills and expertise across several projects.
Experience
The role of senior architect is in recognition of the experience you have gained throughout your career as an architect – typically a minimum of seven years’ post-Part 3 training or qualification.You will be highly experienced in the management and delivery of projects in a specific sector, or across a minimum of two of the following workstages:
Early design stages – (RIBA Stages 1 and 2)
Detailed design – (RIBA Stages 3 and 4)
Construction – (RIBA Stages 5 and 6)
You will have prior experience in managing teams of various sizes, with a proven ability to delegate tasks and assign responsibilities effectively. You will have a developed technical understanding and comprehensive knowledge of UK building regulations, British Standards, and UK planning law. You will have an understanding of construction contracts and be experienced in reviewing and monitoring the scope of services throughout the project lifecycle.
Practice
In addition to managing your projects, you will support the senior team to deliver the studio’s strategic objectives and contribute to broader practice initiatives. You will play an integral role in design and technical peer reviews at key points, sharing knowledge and mentoring junior members of the team.

As a Senior Architect, you will be expected to demonstrate positive leadership, allowing others the space to develop their ideas and proactively offering support and mentorship to others. You will be expected to act with professionalism, communicating confidently with peers, clients and collaborators.
Responsibilities:
Design:
- lead the design process from concept to completion, working with your team to generate and explore design ideas in accordance with the project brief, with direction from the senior team
- lead design reviews, taking direction from Directors to progress design, incorporating feedback to align the project with statutory regulations and best practice, whilst striving to achieve design excellence
- identify and review opportunities for research and development in areas relevant to project work, (e.g., materials development), fostering a culture of innovation within the practice.
Project management:
- plan and manage the development and delivery of a complete project(s) or a specific project work stage
- take responsibility for project service delivery, ensuring compliance with the brief and scope identified in the appointment
- maintain an understanding of current construction legislation to ensure designs adhere to best practice standards, promptly escalating any potential issues to a member of the senior team should they arise
- manage your project team’s day-to-day activities, meticulously planning project activity to meet required deadlines, allocating responsibilities based on individual skill sets, monitoring progress and providing advice and mentorship
- build and maintain positive relationships with the client and wider design team, keeping them informed through regular progress meetings. Recognise the limits of your own knowledge, seeking guidance from associates or associate directors when required
- collaborate with the overseeing associate/associate director to ensure project information is kept up to date in CMAP, regularly reviewing fees, resource and project profitability
- monitor project costs against the project budget with the professional team, ensuring any risks are recorded with the relevant client representatives.
Work closely with consultants, integrating their design work and managing coordination when acting as lead consultant
Studio:
- positively represent the practice, upholding the studio’s ethos and values and adhering to Carmody Groarke’s policies and procedures
- mentor junior team members, maintaining awareness of individual skills and experience, and supporting in their professional development as required
- engage in studio-wide responsibilities according to your own skills and expertise, proactively offering guidance as required
- contribute to the recruitment process, interviewing potential candidates and offering feedback as required
- share project updates with the wider team at studio meetings
Salary
The salary will be in line with the studio salary banding and set in line with skills and experience.
