EOOS is looking for a designer for the Reinvent the Toilet project of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Vienna, Austria.
About the project
EOOS is developing a sitting/squat toilet that separates urine, faeces, and used wash water and can thus be employed as a user interface in a diverse range of transformative technologies of the Gates Foundation research program. The design is based on the Blue Diversion Toilet idea – a dry separation toilet that can be flushed with water. The toilet is conceived for different cultural contexts, above all for areas that use water as opposed to toilet paper. The project consists of a research phase, the construction of ergonomic prototypes and design models, field testing, and the planned realisation with an industrial partner. The full-time position is limited to the duration of the project.
The aim of the project is to design a toilet that can offer a third of the world’s population (2.6 billion people) access to safe and hygienic sanitary facilities. Lack of adequate sanitary provisions can result in severe diarrhoea, which is the cause of death for an estimated 1.8 million people per year and moreover a major threat to the environment.
The project team will consist of two designers, a project manager, and the principal investigator (PI) Harald Gründl.
Qualifications and requirements
Research, ergonomics studies, gender aspects, 3D modelling (Rhino), manual model building in the EOOS workshop, MS Office, willingness to travel, knowledge of foreign languages, ability to work independently, completed education
No fear of: faeces and urine, people and other cultures, field tests
Duration
12 months, from mid-January 2019, full-time position.
