The team
Publica’s team has detailed knowledge and understanding of urban conditions, coupled with a high level of technical expertise in the fields of public realm and urban design, strategic planning, research, film production, communications and graphic design. We place great emphasis on producing engaging, informative and accessible communications material as an integral part of our project work, in the dissemination of our research, and as a tool for advocating for a holistic, evidence-based approach to urban growth.
The position
The role of a senior urban designer is to manage projects and help support the development of our growing business. Key responsibilities will be to lead a team consisting of urban designers and project assistants in delivering, planning, designing and writing area surveys, public realm studies, public realm visions and concept designs for sites across London. This is a client-facing role working closely with the project directors and other members of the team. Potential candidates should have minimum five years’ industry experience working on detailing and delivering public realm schemes and a thorough understanding of our sector.
At Publica, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, preparing and delivering public realm strategies, masterplans and concept designs for sites across London and the UK.
Key responsibilities:
- working closely and effectively with other members of the team, including the executive team, projects director, urban designers, graphic design team, researchers and project assistants or freelancers in the delivery of projects
- managing the delivery of multiple and/or complex projects including the time and resources of the wider Publica project team
- on-site area surveying, including interviews, photography, drawing and mapping
- carrying out desk-based research and archival research
- drawing and digital visualisation of both current conditions and design proposals
- compiling and preparing survey materials and images for reports
- analysing research findings and writing of reports
- assisting in the assembling of case studies
- management of project deadlines and effective coordination with other Publica internal teams, such as graphic design, research, communications and administration
- collaboration with and coordination of other project consultants and sub-consultants
- overall responsibility for the compilation, writing and editing of reports, including integration of research and policy and procedures for quality assurance
- presenting findings and recommendations to internal and external audiences and drafting presentations to be made by other members of the senior team
- supporting the studio manager and director of business and operations by working closely with them to ensure projects are managed within budgets and required timeframes
- contributing to the project risk register and preparing the weekly progress report, clearly communicating key issues to the projects director
- ensuring wider project team adheres to all filing procedures
- contributing to the communications strategy for each project
Other office duties:
- client liaison, including correspondence, attending client meetings and attending public meetings if required
- contribution to sales proposals/tenders/scopes of work for additional services, where appropriate
- mentoring junior staff to ensure Publica has the skills appropriate to the range of projects
- attending internal staff meetings, including weekly team meetings and project meetings
- helping to maintain digital and paper office filing systems relating to the above projects
- general office duties relating to the above work such as printing, tidying or day-to-day correspondence
Salary: negotiable, based on experience
