Workshop technician
at Heatherwick Studio
Heatherwick Studio is looking for a workshop technician to join its workshop in King’s Cross, London.
This role is part of the making team and reports to the head of making. This is a permanent role with an immediate start.
The role
The main responsibility of this role is to keep the day-to-day operations of workshop facilities across the Heatherwick Studio campus to a high standard. You will make sure the procedures working in the workshop are strictly followed. You will be assessing risks and implementing new working procedures and systems to align with the studio’s making activities. You will work closely with head of making and health and safety advisor in maintaining and keeping up to date all health and safety standards.
On a daily basis you are working closely with makers and designers to make sure all making activities in the workshops are efficient and safe. You will coordinate machinery maintenance and documentation, develop safe working guideline documentation and carry out machinery induction and training. You should enjoy working with different people and be happy to provide assistance and help whenever needed.
Occasionally, you will have opportunity to assist the making process and support the project team developing the design through physical and digital making.
Skills and experience
The profile we are looking for is someone with:
- solid knowledge and demonstrable experience of running workshop facilities
- experience working and liaising with a wider studio management infrastructure
- knowledge and experience of health and safety guidelines and procedures relevant to workshop practice
- experience in designing and implementing operations and procedure that underpins safe and efficient making activities
- ability to lead, plan, organise and prioritise workload
- qualification of COSHH, LEV, First aid, IOSHH, etc.
- design related degree is advantageous
- fluent skill to use Rhino is a bonus
- experience working with wood workshop, CNC, laser-cut machine
