House of Commons is seeking a design manager in masterplanning to join its Northern Estates Programme in Westminster, London.

Salary: £50,870 – £62,643

Are you looking for the challenge of a new and exciting historical World Heritage role? Do you have previous experience of managing design on large/complex programmes in construction? Are you able to deliver results through others with the ability to interrogate, challenge and drive results? Then make the move to the House of Commons strategic estates dynamic and growing team as design manager (masterplan).

The Northern Estate Programme (NEP) has been established to manage the comprehensive refurbishment of several significant historic buildings on the parliamentary estate north of Bridge Street in Westminster.

The NEP has a high public profile. The programme also has significant interdependencies with other major programmes on the estate and carries some substantial risks that will require close management.

This vital role of the design manager will see you coordinate and integrate the activities of the programme’s external design consultants, assist in pre-construction activities through to tender opportunities.

You will also monitor, interrogate and challenge the activities of external design consultants ensuring they are achieving desired outputs and working within the scope of the projects within the masterplan.

As an experienced design manager, you will have comprehensive business and negotiation skills alongside proven experience of delivering innovative, safe and cost-effective solutions into the design for historic buildings.

A technical understanding of contemporary interventions on historic buildings would also be advantageous.

We’ll be looking for a good understanding of public procurement processes, including negotiation with third parties, successful contract and risk management and excellent knowledge of value creation. You will also be responsible for ensuring the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice.

This role is being offered on a six-month interim basis or on fixed-term 18-month contract.
