Royal Air Force Museum is seeking an exhibition designer – 3D to join its team in London or Cosford, UK.

We have a fantastic opportunity available for an exhibition designer – 3D to join our exhibitions and interpretation team. This post will be based at either our London or Cosford site. You will design or commission design, manage production and installation of allocated exhibitions and displays at our sites in London and Cosford and touring exhibitions. You will join us on a full-time, permanent basis and in return, we are offering a competitive salary of £35,000 (London) per annum and £32,500 (Cosford) per annum.

Royal Air Force Museum Enterprises is the trading arm of the Royal Air Force Museum with all profits gift-aided to the museum to support its charitable activities.

About the role

The Royal Air Force Museum is looking for an experienced 3D exhibition designer to lead the design of agreed museum’s exhibition and display projects at both sites from concept through delivery, including permanent, temporary and touring exhibitions, ensuring access for all. You will also lead the enhancement of existing displays, working with cross-departmental teams from concept through delivery and hand-over.

Key responsibilities of our exhibition designer – 3D include:

  • work creatively with curators, 2D design, interpretation, audience research, visitors experience, access and learning to create, develop and deliver design concepts
  • provide support as required for the development and delivery of the Cosford and London masterplans
  • for major exhibition projects, support the development and delivery of design concepts, providing advice on exhibitions structures’ specification and finishes
  • stay up-to-date on the latest museum design best practice, providing advice and guidance to museum staff in respect of exhibitions
  • work with the community outreach officer and groups identified for co-curated and co-designed projects, to successfully embed the results/responses
  • project manage cross-departmental teams to ensure the development of allocated exhibitions and displays are progressed to schedule and are delivered on time and budget
  • liaise with and task workshop staff for the in-house production of new displays as well as for the maintenance and update of existing exhibitions and displays
  • provide effective communication between teams, internal and external, for allocated projects

What we are looking for in our ideal exhibition designer – 3D:

  • educated to degree level in 3D, spatial or interior design or equivalent experience
  • demonstrable experience in developing, project managing and delivering high-quality exhibitions and gallery displays in a museum or heritage environment
  • demonstrable experience in creating/overseeing design and concept briefs and in working with designers, writers and creative agencies
  • ability and experience to read and understand technical drawings and technical specifications
  • knowledge of current H&S regulation
  • excellent Microsoft Office software skills
  • working knowledge of a range of design software – these could include; InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino3D
  • ability to produce, analyse and report on financial information and management accounts
  • good hand-sketching skills
