London, UK
Lecturer
at Bartlett School of Architecture
The Bartlett School of Architecture is seeking a lecturer in biodiversity and climate change for bio-integrated design to join its faculty in London.
The Bartlett School of Architecture is a world-leading place to study, teach and research architecture. The School is a key part of UCL, a top-world-ranking university, where architecture has been taught for over 175 years. With over 300 permanent staff, across two state-of-the-art London sites, the school enjoys a rich reputation for cultivating innovative ideas in architecture and is currently ranked global No. 3 by the QS World Ranking by Subject for architecture and the built environment and the top architecture school by the Architects’ Journal AJ100 for the 17th consecutive year.
This is available for an immediate start, in preparation for the 2021-22 academic year. The post sits in bio-integrated design, a cross-disciplinary research and postgraduate teaching platform based at the Bartlett School of architecture and run conjointly with the department of biochemical engineering. It seeks to address the impact of our current climate crisis and reduction of biodiversity by creating new sustainable solutions for our built environment.
Research
The post-holder will develop a remit within building design, ecologically sensitive materials, and fabrication strategies. There will be a specific aim to respond to the biodiversity and climate change crisis in scientific terms, but also considering fundamental values such as equality, sustainable systems, culture, post-colonial practices, etc. to support the overall research strategy of the Bartlett School of Architecture.
Teaching
Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop design teaching in the field of bio-integrated design. This will involve working closely with an interdisciplinary team from architecture and biochemical engineering. The post-holder will harness the School’s reputation for continuous development and critical thinking in design teaching and research, offering support to new initiatives, ways of thinking and future strategies. An innovative, new area will be to introduce scholarship(s) on climate change through a race and spatial justice lens in current curricula on Bio-ID and design.
This is an open-ended position available for an immediate start.
Key requirements
Successful candidates will possess a strong international, interdisciplinary track record and technical knowledge in the field of bio-integrated design with a focus on biodiversity and/or climate change. Alongside this, we are looking for demonstrable knowledge of race and spatial justice as a critical lens for design and/or bio-integrated design.
Candidates will possess an excellent track record in research-led teaching in an architecture context, with an interdisciplinary focus between design and biotechnology. In addition, we are seeking experience of high quality subject related research with a focus on finding solutions to climate and biodiversity crisis and addressing ecological justice.
Previous experience of teaching programme design and management of modules in higher education alongside the ability to mentor students in both design-led projects and technical/scientific domains are essential.
